Scorching heat, violent storms, freak winds and wildfire strike Murcia and Alicante

Scorching heat, violent storms, freak winds and wildfire strike Murcia and Alicante

The Region of Murcia and neighbouring Alicante Province experienced one of the most unusual days of weather so far this summer on Thursday July 23, as temperatures climbed above 44C before violent storms, freak winds, lightning and a fast-moving wildfire swept across the area.

Many people woke up to a red weather warning for extreme heat, with the worst conditions expected across the Guadalentín Valley and Vega Media. As the day went on, the clear blue skies disappeared beneath dark grey clouds tinged brown by Saharan dust. The air became increasingly humid, the wind strengthened and the atmosphere took on an almost eerie feel before thunderstorms, muddy rain and lightning swept across Murcia and Alicante.

The heat was enough to bring many outdoor jobs to a halt, particularly in agriculture and construction, while some Ayuntamientos cancelled activities and temporarily closed public facilities. Beaches along the Orihuela Costa were also closed during the morning as authorities warned that the combination of extreme heat and forecast severe weather later in the day could pose a danger to life.

Emergency health services also treated nine people suffering from heat-related illnesses before 7.00pm. They included five men and four women aged between 29 and 85.

Freak winds arrive as storms roll in

The weather changed dramatically later in the afternoon when thunderstorms developed across the south east. Some areas saw short, heavy downpours mixed with Saharan dust, leaving many cars coated in muddy rain, while more than 100 lightning strikes were recorded between Almería and Alicante.

The storms also brought powerful bursts of wind, known as downbursts. These rare weather events happen when air rushes down from a thunderstorm and spreads out when it reaches the ground.

Some areas experienced wet downbursts, bringing heavy rain, strong winds and a sharp drop in temperature. Others saw dry downbursts, where temperatures actually rose, humidity dropped and violent winds arrived with little or no rainfall.

In Murcia city and Guadalupe, wind gusts reached around 80km/h, bringing down trees in Joven Futura and Espinardo and causing damage to some properties.

Wildfire spreads rapidly near Mazarrón

The hot, dry winds also helped a wildfire spread quickly through the Sierra del Algarrobo and Sierra de La Perdiz, between Mazarrón and Fuente Álamo.

Almost 100 firefighters and emergency workers were deployed alongside five firefighting aircraft as crews worked to stop the flames spreading.

The Guardia Civil, Policía Local, environmental officers and Civil Protection volunteers also helped close roads and keep people away from the affected area.

The Ayuntamiento of Fuente Álamo advised residents in La Pinilla, Los Cánovas, Campillo and Las Palas to stay indoors as a precaution. On the Mazarrón side of the fire, the flames threatened the residential areas of Camposol, Mazarrón Country Club and El Saladillo. The fire is now under control.

Alicante also caught in the wild weather

The same weather system continued into Alicante province, bringing more extreme conditions.

In Aspe, dramatic footage showed a sudden blast of wind lifting dust high into the air within seconds. Meteorologists said it was another example of a downburst, which can arrive with little warning and produce damaging winds.

Torrevieja also saw one of the biggest swings in temperature. A dry downburst pushed temperatures close to 42C while powerful gusts swept through the town.

Further along the coast, Santa Pola reached 41.8C, Guardamar del Segura climbed to 41.6C and even the small island of Tabarca recorded an exceptional 41.4C. While temperatures above 40C are not unusual inland during a heatwave, seeing figures like these right on the Mediterranean coast is extremely rare, where the sea normally keeps conditions noticeably cooler.

In Guardamar, temperatures jumped by around 10 degrees in just a few minutes while humidity dropped sharply, one of the clearest signs of a dry downburst.

The storms later moved north towards the Marina Alta, bringing heavy showers and strong winds to several towns, while Orihuela experienced gusts of up to 80km/h after temperatures had already reached 43C. For many across Murcia and Alicante, it was a day that started with record-breaking heat and ended with some of the most unusual weather conditions seen for years.
