ARCHIVED - Sea grass and algae being cleared from Mar Menor beaches again

If left to decompose the seaweed could turn into unpleasant mud on the beaches

With Spain currently in the grip of the third wave of coronavirus infections it would be easy to forget other on-going issues of importance in the Region of Murcia, but the condition of the Mar Menor and its beaches is a continuing concern and this week teams of cleaners have been sent by the Town Hall of Cartagena to the southern end of the lagoon to clear large quantities of seaweed from the shoreline.

This winter has mercifully seen no repeat (as yet…) of the torrential storms which battered the Costa Cálida last year and carried large volumes of mud-laden water down into the lagoon, but in recent weeks large amounts of dead sea grass have been driven to the shores by the prevailing winds. If the vegetation is left there it will decompose and eventually cause the formation of the unpleasant mud which has been such a problem along the inland shore of the Mar Menor in recent years, hence the need to take action before this process begins.

The Town Hall teams are working this week mostly on the beaches of Punta Brava and Los Urrutias but are also scheduled to visit Los Nietos, Islas Menores and Playa Paraíso.

La Manga
As was the case last winter, the posidonia, which has accumulated on Mediterranean beaches in La Manga del Mar Menor will be used to created barriers protecting the sand from possible future storms. This seaweed has different characteristics from those of the vegetation in the Mar Menor, meaning that rather than representing a possible health risk during decomposition it can be used to protect the sand dunes.
