Semana Santa Jumilla

Last year Jumilla celebrated its 600th Anniversary, making this Semana Santa one of the most important in the region in terms of its historical importance. It also has one of the most important sculptures outside of Murcia Capital, with Cristo Amarrado by Francisco Salzillo participating in some of the processions.


Friday 30th March, Viernes de Dolores
Vía Crucis penitencial.
14 altars are mounted, forming the focal point of the acts of Semana Santa, around which the pasos will file during the next few days.
The route leads from the Iglesia de Santiago, to the Iglesia del Salvador.

Jesus enters Jerusalem on a donkey, warning Jerusalem of the fate which will befall it, accompanied by a crowd waving palm and olive branches.

The first phase of the transfer of Cristo Amarraso a la Columna

Following this the image of Cristo Amarrado de la Columna, is transferred from the Monastery of Santa Ana to the hermitage of San Agustin, part of the journey from the outskirts of the town into the centre. This particular image is by Francisco Salzillo, Murcias most famous sculptor and is one of the most important in Jumillas collection.

Route: From the Convento de Santa Ana to the Ermita de San Agustín.

Second phase of the transfer.
At 9pm the image of Christ tied to the whipping post makes its way from the Ermita de San Agustín to the Parroquía Mayor de Santiago.

Tuesday 3rd April
Martes Santo.

Holy Tuesday is a day of penitence in Jumilla, the penitents dressed in black tunics, tied with rope, dragging chains behind them, many barefoot, a Vía Crucis of austerity. Lights are extinguished, the only lights showing those of bonfires lit in the streets.
Cristo de la Vida is carried through the streets in silence, the night broken only by the beat of a solitary tambor and the shuffle of feet.

Wednesday 4th April
Performance of "El prendimiento".
In late afternoon the drama of the prendimiento, or the capture of Jesus is played out in the Plaza de Arriba, the entrance to the old Palacio del Concejo.

This is an 8 part drama, with 15 different scenes, written in verse, performed by 18 actors, preceding the procession of Jesús prendido with the participation of  10 brotherhoods.

Thursday 5th April, Jueves Santo
On Thursday evening its traditional that the brotherhoods visit the monuments installed in the churches and chapels of the town, the men wearing the distinctive tunic of their brotherhood, the ladies in their lacy mantillas. Each brotherhood is accompanied by its own band, and the air is festive and relaxed.

The procession leaves at 5.30pm, each brotherhood leaving from their own headquarters.

Friday 6th April, Viernes Santo
This is the most solemn day of the week. The 16 brotherhoods and pasos make the longest procession of Semana Santa in Jumilla, presided over by Nuestra Señora del Primer Dolor.

At night-time the procession of the Santo Entierro takes place, many barefoot penitents amongst the participants, a solemn, intense procession.

11am, The procession from the Calvery. A procession with its roots in the 16th century, leaving from the Iglesia del Salvador.

Tamborada de la Resurrección
Performed by the Brotherhood of Cristo del perdón.
This is a drumming in of the day of resurrection and takes place from 11.30pm to midnight , between Plaza Arriba and the Plaza del Mercado.


Sunday 8th April, Resurrection Sunday
The day of light, of flowers, of resuurection. The mood changes, the oppression of penitence is lifted, this is the moment of celebration.
11 pasos follow the route, accompanied by cheerful music, and showering the watching crowds with sweets.
In the Plaza del Rollo the traditional encuentro between Jesús Resuscitado and the Virgen Gloriosa takes place.
