ARCHIVED - Sharp spike in coronavirus data expected as Spain introduces rapid testing techniques
50,000 extra medical staff called up to cope with the spread of Covid-19
Health professionals in Spain are warning that there is likely to be an even sharper increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases over the next couple of days – the current total currently stands at over 18,000 with 832 fatalities – as new rapid testing equipment comes into use.
The WHO repeatedly states that knowing the true extent of the pandemic is crucial in combating its spread but this week in Spain many people with only mild symptoms have not been tested due material and human resources being stretched to their limit. Starting on Thursday, though, new testing techniques have become available enabling those in isolation at home to be tested rapidly, probably bringing about a sudden increase in the figures as they begin to reflect the real situation throughout this country.
In order to cope with the crisis it has been announced that an extra 50,000 health and medical professionals are being taken on by the public health services, including 7,633 resident doctors in hospitals all over the country who were due to be released from their current contracts and another 11,000 medical and nursing staff from the employment “pool”. In addition, another 14,000 doctors and nurses are being invited to re-join the public health service, along with 10,200 support staff and 7,000 students of Medicine who are currently in their final year of studies.
Until when?
When the number of patients is likely to start falling is one of the great unknowns in Spain, but the Murcia government’s regional minister for Health has warned that, if the experiences in other parts of the world are anything to go by, that will begin to occur at least three weeks after strict containment measures were brought in: in other words, the official figures are unlikely to offer much positive news until around the first weekend of April AT THE EARLIEST.
In the meantime, the authorities in China have confirmed that testing on possible vaccines has already started, but at the same time warn that it will be at least a year before the vaccines are available for mass distribution. Light at the end of the tunnel, though, is provided by the Chinese authorities’ reports that no new cases were reported in the country on Thursday for the second day in a row apart from those of 34 people returning from other countries.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
