ARCHIVED - Significant changes to lifeguard infrastructure in Cartagena
This year professional contracts have replaced the agreement with Cruz Roja
This year Cartagena council has undergone drastic changes in the management of beach services, and has endured a rather lumpy transition between the inherited services infrastructure and the new initiatives which has attracted harsh criticism from the owners of beach bar chiringuitos who have missed the first few weekends of an already short earnings window of opportunity and those who live alongside beaches which have been noticeably short on maintenance following the dissolution of the former IMSEL which managed the beach network.
However, slowly, slowly, problems are being resolved as the summer season approaches, and the new broom is sweeping out the old with significant changes.
The latest area to receive attention has been the contract for lifeguard and medical cover, and this year the former agreement with Cruz Roja, which supplied lifeguard cover on a “voluntary but with financially supported basis” has been scrapped, and this year the council is directly contracting lifeguards and medical support personnel at a total cost of 743, 000 euros for the season.
120, 000 euros is contributed towards the cost by the regional Plan COPLA, and the remainder of the cost is borne by the council.
This means that for the first time all of the lifeguards are on employment contracts and are professional lifeguards instead of trained volunteers.
Further investment has been made into supplying each of the lifesaving points with defibrillators and ensuring that all of those contracted are fully trained in their use, the medical facilities supported by an ambulance covering La Manga and rapid intervention vehicles with medic on board in the Mar Menor and La Azohía.
These are also supported by marine lifeguard vessels covering the Mediterranean coastal beaches, the Mar Menor and La Azohía.
Investment has also been made to replace the deteriorated lifeguard huts on the beaches of Galúa, Sirenas and Levante, and the vigilance towers of la Manga have also been given a thorough overall to improve both stability and visibility.
Some lifeguard points now open at weekends
Six lifeguard points opened during the first weekend of June on the beaches of Galúa and Zeus in La Manga; Los Nietos and Islas Menores Levante in the Mar Menor; Cala Cortina in Cartagena and San Ginés in La Azohía.
These same six lifeguard points will open this weekend to coincide with the bank holiday on Friday 9th, and then on the 17th all of the La Manga lifeguard points will open with the exception of the beaches of Monte Blanco.
The remainder of the 24 lifeguard points will open throughout July and August on a daily basis.
