ARCHIVED - Significant drop in temperatures ahead between Wednesday and Sunday in Murcia Region
Temperatures will drop below freezing inland and there could even be some snow in higher areas
The regional health authorities have been extremely concerned about the amount of socialising that could conceivably take place this Bank Holiday weekend, but with the restrictions on bars and restaurants limiting service to outdoor terrace areas, their efforts to prevent people gathering may be assisted by a cold front sweeping across Spain which will undoubtedly ensure that we’re all less enthusiastic about sitting on outdoor terraces for too long over the weekend.
Aemet, the state meteorological agency, has issued an advisory note explaining that on Thursday afternoon, 3rd December, a cold front is moving in from the northwest that will cause temperatures to fall to levels more typical of winter than those which we have been enjoying at the end of a warmer than average November.
This front also brings an Atlantic storm with associated fronts and rainfall, which will mainly affect the north of the peninsula, bringing abundant snowfall in the north of the country and even the flatter central areas of Spain. As part of this there is a separate storm which will affect all of the country, bringing rain.
Today, Wednesday, a significant drop in temperatures will begin everywhere as the wind changes to a northerly, bringing in a mass of cold air.
This will carry rainfall to the north of Spain and Balearic Islands, but down on the Mediterranean coast we will notice the drop in air temperature.
On Thursday afternoon and on Friday, a very active front will cross the Spanish mainland to the Balearic Islands, moving from west to east, leaving widespread rainfall and moderate to strong winds in its wake.
There will be another drop in temperatures and snow can be expected on mountain ranges above 500-800 meters in the northern half of the country and above 800-1200 meters in the middle and southern areas.
All this will be accompanied by a maritime storm bringing cold air and unstable conditions with rainfall affecting all of the country, although northern areas will bear the brunt of the colder, wetter weather.
Murcia Region
Down here in the south of the country on the Mediterranean coastline, temperatures will fall noticeably across the next five days.Temperatures are likely to fall by between 2 and 4 degrees on Wednesday as the cold air moves in although sun and cloud will make this a pleasant, sunny, but windy day with just a slight chill in the air. Maximums will still reach around 19 degrees in Murcia, Lorca and Cartagena, while in Caravaca and Yecla they will be around 16. The overnight minimums, however, will not exceed 10 degrees anywhere, which is a noticeable fall on the coast. In Murcia and Cartagena minimums will be around 9, in Lorca 8 degrees and in Caravaca and Yecla they will drop down to 2º.
On Thursday temperatures will fall more markedly and there may even be a touch of frost in the north and north-west where the land mass is higher.
Maximums will drop to between 12-15 degrees, and overnight minimums fall to 7 degrees in Cartagena, 5 in Murcia, 2 in Lorca and -1 in Caravaca and Yecla.
On Friday temperatures will move back upwards by a couple of degrees as the rain moves in, so Murcia and Cartagena will reach 18º, Lorca 15º and Yecla and Caravaca 12º. The minimums will remain above freezing in the entire Region, with Cartagena expected to remain around 10 degrees, Murcia and Lorca will be around 6, Caravaca will drop to 3 and Yecla will register 1 Degree Celsius. The coast can expect light showers and sunny intervals, but inland the rainfall will be more persistent and stormy. In the more mountainous areas of the north and north-west there could even be some snow in higher locations 900 metres above sea level. This normally affects areas such as Moratalla and Caravaca de la Cruz, which are generally the first municipalities to see any snow in the winter months.
By Saturday temperatures will fall again, the highest being in low-lying Murcia and Cartagena with around 12ºC. Lorca can expect 9, Caravaca 7 and Yecla 6. Overnight, Cartagena and Murcia will hover around 6 degrees, Lorca will fall to 3, Caravaca to 1 and Yecla will drop below freezing with -1.
On Sunday the cold polar front which will bring snow to northern and central Spain will drive down the temperatures overnight once again, Lorca and Murcia city are expected to drop down to 2 and 4 degrees respectively, while the remainder of Murcia maintains the levels of Saturday.
So all in all, it’s going to be a chilly Bank Holiday weekend, so wrap up warm if heading down to the local bar for a drink.
Remember that mobility restrictions limiting movement this weekend remain in place, so the rule is that we all have to stay in our “home municipality”; there will be more police around this weekend enforcing the rules due to it being a holiday weekend, with Monday and Tuesday being Bank Holidays.
