ARCHIVED - Spain Covid update September 28: another sharp increase in incidence rate
The average incidence among older people in Spain has risen five points since Friday
The latest coronavirus vaccination campaign has begun across Spain this week and it looks like it hasn't come a moment too soon, as most of the important pandemic indicators have taken an upswing again this week. Hospital pressure is the stand-out, with both general and ICU admissions climbing. However, perspective is important and the figures are still nowhere near those seen in the middle of the summer.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 8,761 new coronavirus infections in Spain on Tuesday September 27, which brings the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,412,263.
Cumulative incidence rate
Most worrying is the 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60. After jumping six points to land at 136.26 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last update, another five notches have been added since Friday, with the figure reaching 141.78.
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has also experienced another increase, rising from 67.92 cases to 70.21.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 196.66 cases, followed by septuagenarians (157.09), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (102.08). All of these age groups have, unfortunately, noted an increase since the last report.
Looking at the incidence by autonomous community, the enclave of Ceuta continues to have the best figures, remaining at 13.18 cases per 100,000.
It’s followed by Andalucia this week, with an incidence rate of 73.57 (registering a tiny dip from 73.92 in the last report) and Navarra, which has seen a big increase from 73.25 cases on Friday to 92.41 today.
The Canary Islands, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha have the highest rates in the country, but none exceed 250, which means that all of Spain is in a state of controlled circulation.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
Following the trend set by the incidence rate, hospital pressure has also increased since the weekend.
There are currently 2,332 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain, (126 more than on Friday) while 143 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (an upswing of 14 since the last update).
These data mean that 1.65% of intensive care beds are occupied by Covid patients (up from 1.86%).
The Basque Country’s ICUs are still under the most pressure with an occupation rate of 3.05%, followed by Catalonia (2.83%), Cantabria (2.80%) and the Balearic Islands (2.73%).
Even with this upward trajectory, the general hospital occupancy rate is still below the 1.9% seen last October and a far cry from the 10% registered in mid-July.
A further 37 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Tuesday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 114,084 people.
The regions with the most deaths are the Canary Islands (7), the Valencian Community (7), Castilla-La Mancha (5) and Andalucia (4).
Vaccination data
As of September 28, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,154,017 people have now received two doses.
In addition, 39,265,958 people (93.1%) have had at least one dose.
