ARCHIVED - Spain reports 38,273 new covid cases and 484 fatalities over the weekend
This is considerably lower than the total last weekend and there are indications of stabilisation but the situation is still serious across Spain
Image; Number of cases diagnosed in Spain
The Spanish Ministry of Health has added 38,273 new cases of COVID-19 to its overall total during the weekend, which is a figure much lower than the 52,386 reported over the same time period the previous weekend.
These latest additions take the overall number of cases reported in Spain to 1,496,864 since the beginning of the pandemic, according to official statistics.
484 deaths took the accumulated total to 41,253.
On Monday the Ministry of Health reported an increase of 38,273 coronavirus positives to the overall total across the three day period concluding on Monday evening; 14,113 less than on Monday of last week and the lowest figure for the start of the week in a month; the last time this level of cases was recorded was on Monday October 19th.
Fernando Simón, director of the Ccaes, said that the figures gave indications of a "downward trend that is already appreciable", although he has clarified that all the communities except the Canary Islands continue to report high incidence figures.
The accumulated incidence rate across the last 14 days (which calculates the rate per 100,000 of population in a given area) has fallen sharply in most of the country -except for Asturias, where it has risen by 9.65%, and in Cantabria, where it has risen 0.66%. This rate is generally a more reliable indicator of trends, as it is based on the number of cases reported across an average number of the population, although logically, can only be compiled based on the number of cases diagnosed by PCR test at any given time; should the number of PCR tests be lower than the previous week then logically the number of cases detected is going to be lower.
Image; Fatalities. As can be seen, although the fatalities across Spain are growing, the figures are way short of the peaks reached during the first wave.
This Monday the indicator averaged across the whole country fell by - 5.6% to 470 per 100,000 cases, and this Monday represents the seventh consecutive fall in the reports published by the Ministry. On weekdays the reports are published daily and weekend figures are incorporated into the Monday totals.
Bear in mind that the target level for the virus being considered under control is 25 cases per 100,000, so the level in Spain is still very high.
Simón indicated that 17 of the autonomous regions and autonomous cities (there are 17 regions in Spain and the two enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla on the African coast, giving 19 administrative regions) are stabilized or declining. "It could be an indication that this downward trend could be stable," said Simón, although by now, it’s normal to not be overly optimistic when the figures are reported as so many factors can influence the evolution of the pandemic; as of today the flu season hasn´t even started yet.
However, although there is a certain degree of stabilization in the number of new cases in the last few days, there is no such indicator in the number of fatalities, which totalled 484 across the weekend, bringing the total number of deaths to 41,253. The deaths will continue to be significant even when the number of new cases has slowed down as it generally takes around 3 weeks from infection for death to occur should the patient be susceptible to the virus.
Hospitalizations show signs of slowing down
The slowdown in new infections has also been reflected in the hospitalizations. This Monday the number of patients admitted to hospitals across Spain with coronavirus has increased by 0.8% - a figure conditioned by the effects of the weekend, a period in which fewer registrations are reported than other days of the week, as is the case every Monday.
However, the increase in hospitalizations is also the lowest for a Monday since October 12th.
There are currently 20,452 people admitted to hospitals with coronavirus in Spain, occupying 16.54% of the available beds.
In ICUs, this Monday's increase (1%) has also been much lower than usual in recent weeks. There are currently 3,156 seriously ill patients with Covid throughout Spain occupying 32.8% of the available beds in ICU units. However, both of these figures have increased.
13 regions are still at their highest risk level due to the level of occupation in their ICUs according to the criteria used by the Health Ministry and only the Canary Islands are below the "high" alert level.
So although there is some sign of stabilisation throughout the country, the situation remains serious.
