Spain's wildfire crisis continues as another heatwave threatens to fuel the flames

There has been some encouraging progress overnight, but officials warn conditions are likely to become much more difficult from Wednesday

Firefighters have made some progress in the battle against Spain's devastating wildfires, but officials say the fight is far from over as another heatwave is expected to arrive later this week.

After days of around-the-clock firefighting, crews managed to reduce the immediate threat overnight in parts of Madrid and Ávila. Even so, the fires remain active and emergency services are warning that rising temperatures and changing winds could quickly make conditions worse again.

The fires burning across Madrid and neighbouring Ávila have become one of Spain's biggest wildfire emergencies this summer, forcing thousands of people from their homes and triggering a national emergency.

Taking advantage of calmer conditions before stronger southerly winds arrive, crews focused on strengthening containment lines and stopping the flames from pushing any further.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska said the work carried out overnight had been "reasonably positive".

"We can be a little calmer today," he said. "We've had some very difficult days with an enormous effort. This morning we're very satisfied with the work carried out over the last few days and overnight. We're now going to consolidate that progress."

He explained that the fires in Madrid and Ávila are being managed as a single emergency because separate outbreaks have repeatedly joined, only to break apart again.

There has been some good news for residents in Castilla-La Mancha, where firefighters have stabilised the fire perimeter. That has allowed people in several municipalities, including Buenaventura, Navamorcuende, Real de San Vicente and Castillo de Bayuela, to return home. Evacuation orders remain in place for La Iglesuela and Sartajada.

In total, 41 municipalities remain under evacuation or confinement orders, including 13 in Madrid, 16 in Ávila and 12 in Toledo. Santa María de la Alameda in Madrid and Las Navas del Marqués in Ávila were also confined on Monday evening July 27, as conditions changed.

The Burgohondo wildfire, which has already become the largest wildfire ever recorded in Spain after burning more than 50,000 hectares, produced far less smoke on Tuesday morning. Residents in Ávila city woke to much clearer skies than the day before, although the smell of smoke still lingered across much of the province.

Firefighters are now racing against the weather. A new heatwave is expected to arrive on Wednesday, bringing high temperatures, very dry air and the kind of conditions that allow wildfires to spread quickly. For that reason, Tuesday's efforts are largely focused on monitoring hotspots and cooling burnt ground before conditions become more difficult.

The wildfire at Vall d'Uixó in Castellón also remains active after four days. Around 8,500 hectares have been destroyed and about 10,000 people are still unable to return home, although around 6,000 residents were allowed back on Monday evening.

Travel disruption also continues. According to the Dirección General de Tráfico, 47 roads remain closed because of the wildfires, including routes across Madrid, Ávila, Toledo and Castellón. Authorities are continuing to urge people to avoid unnecessary journeys in affected areas and to keep checking official updates as firefighters work to stay ahead of the changing conditions.
