ARCHIVED - Spanish Covid-19 vaccination programme playing catch-up following half-hearted start
Former WHO Director warns that third wave will be the worst and urges countries to vaccinate “like a military campaign”
Madrid and Catalunya for example, have only used 6 and 13% respectively of the vaccines allocated to them.
The autonomous regions of Spain are starting to try and ramp-up their vaccination programmes from this Monday following a half-hearted start to the Covid-19 vaccination campaign in which fewer doses than planned have been administered during the first week, the estimate being that only 25% of the vaccines delivered have actually been administered.
Some regional governments have blamed the slow start to the programme on holidays or logistical problems, and progress of the vaccination process, which began on Sunday, December 27th, varies wildly throughout the country.
The data provided by Madrid and Catalonia, where only 6% and 13% of the doses have been innoculated respectively, contrasts, for example, with data provided by Asturias, which has used 80.7% of the 12,070 vaccines made available to date and those of Galicia, which has administered more than half of the available doses.
On Monday the Minister of Health for the Madrid region, Enrique Ruiz Escudero, blamed the low percentage of vaccination in the region, equivalent to some 3,000 doses, on the Health Ministry, saying that the vaccines arrived "24 hours late", and said that some of the residences had asked to postpone the programme until a week later because many old people were going to spend the holidays with their families.
In Catalunya, health experts have urged the Generalitat regional government to accelerate the vaccination campaign where only 7,700 doses of the 60,000 that the pharmaceutical company has sent in a first batch had been administered by Sunday, just 13% of the vaccines received. The Generalitat had counted on having the 104,000 people who live and work in the 1,408 residences in Catalonia vaccinated in two weeks.
The Catalan government blames logistical problems and difficulties in the procedures being followed, amongst them, the fact that the refrigerated vehicles which had been booked for transporting the vaccines were trapped in the Calais tunnel during the border closure with the United Kingdom.
Murcia Region:
The Ministry of Health in the Region of Murcia affirms that this Monday they will reach the 5,000 vaccinations mark and assures that "they have been vaccinating every day since the campaign began, without interruption caused by holidays", according to Covid Monitoring Committee spokesman, Jaime Pérez, who says that in residences in the Murcia region there are 12,400 workers and residents, so "almost 50%" will have been vaccinated by the end of the day. The plan is to vaccinate "the vast majority" of them, throughout this week,he added.
Former WHO Director warns that third wave will be the worst and urges countries to vaccinate “like a military campaign”
Epidemiologist and former director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Daniel López Acuña said this Monday that we are "fully entering a third wave" of the pandemic due to the "relaxation" of protection measures against Covid -19 during the Christmas period.
In an interview with the radio station Onda Vasca, he warned that in this third wave there will be a greater number of infections because the virus is starting from an incidence point much higher than that of the end of the summer, when there were only around 25 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
This is in addition to the presence of the new variant of the virus detected in the United Kingdom, which is not more lethal but is considerably more contagious. The consequence, as he has pointed out, is that the transmission capacity of the virus is going to be multiplied by ten and with this there will be a "worrying healthcare pressure".
He believes that the authorities have made "some mistakes" in their efforts to prevent the current situation by not having decreed "more drastic measures", such as a "short" home confinement during the month of November.
He has insisted on the importance of getting vaccinated and stressed that the reluctance to do so is "the product of confusion and ignorance." It seems "terrible" to him that such reluctance can occur in centers for the elderly, where he believes that it should be mandatory to be able to vaccinate in all centres since residents and staff are facing a "collective risk."
His advice is that the authorities "vaccinate intensively at the highest possible rate." It should be done as if it were "a military and war operation, without ceasing, every day," he said.
