ARCHIVED - Spanish parliament to vote on further coronavirus lockdown extension next week
An extension until at least 11th May appears inevitable at present
There have been some indications in recent data that the emergency lockdown in Spain is having the desired effect in stabilizing the number of confirmed active cases of Covid-19, although the latest official figures released on Wednesday morning( 177,633 cases, 18,759 deceased) underlined the fact that this is a precarious state of affairs, but the numbers are not yet falling and it is hard to imagine that a further extension to the lockdown will not be decided upon until at least 11th May.
The restrictions on movement are currently in force until 26th April, and a further extension will not be voted on in Congress until next Wednesday, 22nd April. This, of course, is assuming that Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez will propose another extension, but with the daily Covid-19 death toll still in excess of 500 it seems inconceivable that he will decide not to do so.
It was at midnight on 14th/15th March that the state of emergency first came into effect for two weeks, and it has already been extended first until 12th April and then until 26th April. With little or no possibility of the pandemic being over by the latter date Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is “convinced” that he will be requesting backing for another two weeks of restrictions, and has even explained that he would consider asking for a month if that did not inevitably lead to claims that he was attempting to “bypass” parliament.
Meanwhile, how the actual debate next week might be held is a subject for debate itself. Some have proposed that fewer MPs be required to attend, or that at least three seats be left empty between attendees, while others have objected to other matters being debated in the same session (such as the latest EU summits) due to the risk of contagion.
Although we're all desperate for the restrictions to end, or at least be relaxed to allow some form of daily exercise, it's inevitable that we're in for a long haul here and cannot expect life to return to normal for some considerable time to come. Click to read the latest information about the discussions within the Spanish government about the ways in which the lockdown could potentially be relaxed.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
