ARCHIVED - Spanish shoppers stop panic buying and purchase 78 per cent more beer
Desperate time call for desperate measures – so pour yourself another desperate measure!
It is now 10 days since the coronavirus lockdown in Spain was announced by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and after the initial wave of panic buying the latest analysis of retail data by Gelt has noted some interesting trends in shopping habits across the country.
In the UK in recent days frustrated shoppers have been reporting an absolute dearth of toilet paper and potatoes on supermarket shelves, and similar immediate responses to lockdown measures are reported all over the world from Spain to the Middle East and Australia. But in Spain the latest Gelt survey finds that sales of olive oil and toilet paper have fallen sharply (perhaps as people realize that they have already bought enough to last them for months!) and over the last week it appears that Spaniards are prioritizing their shopping rather differently and concentrating on different items which they really need in order to survive being confined to their homes: in other words, beer.
Desperate times, they say, call for desperate measures, and it would appear that plenty of Spaniards are preparing to pour themselves a number of desperate measures over the next few weeks as Gelt finds that beer sales have increased by 78 per cent in their latest survey.
Other items showing significant increases include cleaning products (+34%), other alcoholic beverages (+24%) and canned foods (+23%), while sharp falls are reported in sales of olive oil (-58%), pre-cooked meals (-48% after the pizza shelves of Mercadona were left completely empty 10 days ago), rice (-46%), vegetables (-42%), powdered milk (-36%), ammonia (-33%), pasta (-33%), toilet paper (-10%) and bleach (-8%).
One Gelt analyst summarizes the latest data by reporting that people have now overcome the initial phase of fear and panic buying and are now shopping more intelligently and rationally: with plenty of time on their hands at home, for many people in Spain this obviously involves making sure that there is a healthy stockpile of beer to see them through the current emergency!
Other surveys in recent years suggest that the demand for beer in Murcia may be higher than elsewhere in the country: in 2018 a survey carried out by Rumbo.es concluded that the Murcianos were the biggest fans of beer in Spain, with 76 per cent of those who took part in the poll nominating the “amber nectar” as their favourite tipple. The next highest percentages were reported in Andalucía and Extremadura, with 54 per cent and 51 per cent respectively, while the only place where beer didn’t top the table was La Rioja, where the locally produced wines head the list with 29 per cent.
But the British topped some of the rankings in the survey: not only were they the nationality who start drinking earliest in the day (13 per cent at 12.00 midday and 4 per cent at 10.00 in the morning), they were also those with least enthusiasm for following a healthy diet: 56 per cent declared that they had no interest at all, whereas in Spain the proportion was a lowly 28 per cent!

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
