ARCHIVED - State of Emergency in Spain to be extended by a further 15 days
The national government has taken the decision after a teleconference with the regional governments this morning
The number of cases keeps on rising, and this morning Spain has 25,483 confirmed cases of coronavirus, many thousands more suspected cases which are not even included in the cases list as currently the health services lack the test kits and resources to be able to test everyone calling the helplines and 1422 people are confirmed dead.
In the full knowledge that many of those who are contagious and still don´t know it have yet to show symptoms, the decision has been taken this morning to officially extend the lockdown period for a further 15 days, leaving Spain in confinement right through the Easter holidays.
The government must now ask the Congress to ratify the documentation necessary to enforce the measure, but all of the Autonomous Communities are backing the decision, as the virus continues to claim lives.
The original State of Emergency was approved on the 14th March and lasts until the 29th March; this new extension prolongs the period of lockdown in Spain until Sunday 12th April.
Although 2,125 people have now recovered fully from the virus in Spain, nobody is under any illusion that the worst is yet to come due to the sheer number of infected individuals who have yet to show symptoms and are still contagious. The government has purchased 640,000 rapid tests kits which are being distributed to the autonomous communities to enable them to test more people and isolate the known cases, and has contracted 52,000 more health personnel to cope with the expected influx of patients.
Madrid is totally overwhelmed and field hospitals to hold a further 5,000 patients set up by the army to cope with the continued rise in cases are starting to receive their first patients.
It's important for the expat community to understand that although the majority of cases recorded are amongst those under the age of 65, 70% of those currently in intensive care units are OVER 65, and as the majority of our community are retirees, it's absolutely essential that we all abide with the lockdown and don´t take any chances at all with our own exposure and that of our families and partners.
We've been in lockdown for a week.
We now have three more weeks to face and yes, it's going to be tough, but we know from the authorities that there are cases on some of the expat urbanisations, although we are deliberately NOT reporting the specific information in order not to be accused of scaremongering, but we must respect the lockdown and all play our part in halting the spread of the virus.
And keep positive.
"To be honest I don't find it boring to stay inside all day...... but I don't understand why in one box of Rice Krispies there are 22,453 pieces and in the other one 22,467 (before anyone asks I have triple checked my figures)."

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212), and also urges people to call the 112 emergency services line if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre. Medical staff will be sent to your home to test for the virus.
The Region’s public hospitals have limited the number of visitors to just one per patient.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
