Date Published: 05/09/2024ARCHIVED ARTICLE -Storms leave flooding in parts of Murcia but what will the weather be like this weekend?
Rains caused flooding and emergency situations in Jumilla and other parts of the Region of Murcia this Wednesday
Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) activated a yellow warning for storms and rain during the afternoon of Wednesday September 4 and early on Thursday morning, September 5, in the Altiplano, the Vega del Segura and Campo de Cartagena and Mazarrón areas.Specifically, the warning, which warned of accumulated rainfall of 20 litres per square metre in one hour, ran up until 3am on Thursday, with a probability of between 40% and 70%.A yellow storm warning indicates that heavy thunderstorms are expected in the affected warning area. The Director General of Public Safety and Emergencies even activated Emergency Phase 0 of the Inunmur flood plan as a result of yesterday’s heavy rainfall in the northern Murcia town of Jumilla. The municipality requested assistance for the cleaning of streets, rural roads and drainage works, especially after a waterspout burst, causing additional flooding.¡Menuda situación! Esta noche (03/09/2024), así está la situación en #Jumilla (#Murcia), donde algunos observatorios ya superan los 70 mm en menos de 1 hora. — MeteOrihuela (@MeteOrihuela) September 3, 2024Immediately, from the General Directorate of Natural Heritage and Climate Action of the Regional Ministry of the Environment, Universities, Research and Mar Menor, up to three forestry brigades with 25 people were sent to the municipality of Jumilla to help out.In the early hours of Tuesday to Wednesday night, heavy rains were also recorded in some areas of the eastern half of the Region. In total, the Emergency Coordination Centre has managed a total of 70 incidents caused by rain and storms, most of them in the municipality of Jumilla, since the rainfall began around midnight and until early Wednesday morning.Floods, drainage, rescues, road obstructions and floods are some of the incidents recorded by the 112 Emergency Services. Fortunately, no one was harmed in any of the incidents. But Jumilla wasn’t the only area affected by the heavy rains. In San Javier, a downpour surprised the coastal area of Santiago de la Ribera, where there was an accumulation of almost 45 mm of rain in just one hour and some streets were flooded.Y de repente... ¡aguacero! Esta madrugada (04/09/2024), así llueve y así están anegadas las calles en #SantiagoDeLaRibera, pedanía de #SanJavier (#Murcia). Registros de casi 45 mm en la zona.
