Up to seven roads have been closed in and around Cartagena due to the rains falling in the Murcia Region this week. The yellow weather warning issued yesterday has been upgraded to orange, signalling the seriousness of the rains that threaten to leave up to 90mm of precipitation over the course of 12 hours in Los Alcázares.

The Cartagena roads closed to traffic include the Rambla de la Mina, Carretera Sifón, Vía Pozo de Los Palos, the road from El Algar to Los Alcázares, the Cruce de las Cañas, La Vía de La Aparecida road and the road going from Rambla de Las Matildes towards El Algar. In addition, the La Palma commercial area has been flooded.

The worst of the rainfall is falling around the Mar Menor, especially in Cabo de Palos, which saw a total of 44 litres per square metre.

The mouth of the El Albujón rambla in the Mar Menor has registered 83.8 litres per square metre accumulated in the last 24 hours alone, according to data from the Automatic Hydrological Information Service (SAIH) of the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS).

So far, the emergency services have been called out 30 times this Thursday, 15 of them in the municipality of Cartagena, including needing to rescue the occupants of three vehicles that became trapped in floods.

A further eight emergency situations were called due to obstacles on the road and three to water drainage, according to sources from the Emergency Coordination Centre.

Weather forecast for this weekend

The current forecast from Aemet is for the rain to die away in Murcia by tomorrow, leaving a relatively dry Saturday and Sunday.

However, on Monday and at least through to Wednesday there will be more rains, which will be especially heavy next Tuesday.
