ARCHIVED - Suspected cases in Murcia Region exceed 12,000 as actual case count rises to 773
In total 25,000 people are being monitored telephonically by the health service
The surreal Coronavirus pandemic continues its onward march and to our horror we find that the thousands of cases has become nothing more than the word "cases."
Some expats on social media are still arguing that the media is "sensationalising" the crisis and failing to report the number of people recovering from the virus, but it's hard to find a lot of positivity in the numbers as the quantity of "cases" and "deceased"continue to rise.
Last night I found myself engaged in a hot debate with an individual who shall remain nameless, but accused this product of "profiteering", "stirring things up" and "creating panic" by reporting the daily "cases", of "failing to report the numbers cured to date" as well as, horror of horrors, failing to adequately investigate how many people have died of the common flu worldwide in the last few years in order to prove beyond doubt that all of this crisis is just the "media sensationalising because we've got nothing better to write about post-Brexit."
I concluded the argument by challenging this person to sit down and write a list of all their family members, let's say, for many of us, that may be 20 immediate family, then adding in all the people they considered to be their friends, lets's say for the simplicity of calculations, bringing the list in front of you up to 60 people, lets' s make that easy to visualise by putting them all in a coach. That's your life there in front of you, the 60 people you care about most.
They're laughing, they're smiling, they're sharing your memories, they're people, they're not cases, they're human beings. They're your reason for being. They're not numbers. They're real people.
Yesterday 832 PEOPLE died in Spain through coronavirus.
That's just under 14 FULL coachloads of friends, mums, dads, cousins, brothers and sisters who died just YESTERDAY, the blackest day for Spain in this crisis so far.
After which I deleted the conversation and blocked him out of the group before switching off the computer and watching the late night news, in which lines of lorries specially adapted to act as mobile morgues were lined up in New York waiting for the dead to fill them.
But of course, that's just the media sensationalising isn´t it!!!!.
On Monday when more resource is available, we'll be analysing some data which points to the death rate being far higher than the media have been reporting, and far higher than the health service has been admitting, many of the early deaths attributed to pneumonia, not coronavirus.
But for today, and without attempting to scaremonger, the biggest preoccupation of the health authorities is the growing number of "suspected" cases.
Yesterday our own regional health service made public figures which should ensure that none of us have any desire to leave our homes and find excuses to go down to the shops three times a day hoping that we might find someone we know to have a bit of a chat.
Our own figures here are pretty low in the Region of Murcia. We have 773 cases as of last night, an increase of 86 in a day and we now have 17 dead.
231 of these patients are isolated at home, 58 are in intensive care and 12 people have now recovered, bringing the total number of reported cases to 802 including those who have died and those who have recovered.
Which isn´t too bad when you look at the national total announced an hour ago, which gives Spain 72,248 live cases, a rise of 8,189 in one day, the death rate rising to 5,694 PEOPLE.
However, the big problem we have is the number of SUSPECTED CASES.
Because the health service lacks the resource to test everyone calling the helpline and reporting symptoms of Covid-19, and the rapid test kits purchased from China to help speed up the diagnosis have been sent back as the first batch were all sub-standard, nearly all of the people who have mild cases are not even being tested and are never counted in the official figures.
Last Monday our health service revealed that we had 7,500 such individuals, but yesterday (Friday) they revealed that this huge number of people had risen to 12,000 people in just 5 days. In addition, a further 13,000 were being monitored telephonically as these individuals had been in close contact with known contagious cases.
All of these 25,000 people are at home in isolation, and are NOT included anywhere in the official figures as "cases".
That's a lot of people, a lot more than the official 773 cases, and between them offer a lot more opportunities for other people to have themselves become contagious, spreading the virus further.
We're all starting to realise just how highly contagious this virus is, so think twice about the number of contacts you have daily and think twice about ANY potential contact you could make when shopping, or leaving your home for any reason.
Yesterday we reported just one case of the Guardia Civíl fining a contagious couple who had been ordered to remain at home in isolation, but had gone shopping in their local supermarket in the full knowledge that they were contagious!.
The virus is known to remain live on metal surfaces, on clothes, on shopping, on anything that you may have touched, so sterilise everything, change your clothes after shopping, wipe shopping down with disinfectant wipes and be careful.
We don´t want to see this number of "cases" continuing to climb.
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
