A monument to fishermen alongside Playa Espejo in Los Alcázares

The Monumento al Pescador in Los Alcazares Fishing has always been an essential element of the economy and history in Los Alcázares and the whole area of the Mar Menor and this bronze monument was created by Manuel Nicolas Almansa to pay homage to the fishermen of the town of Los Alcazáres.

The statue was officially inaugurated on 13th Oct 1998, marking the day on which the municipality of Los Alcázares achieved its autonomy as a municipality from those of San Javier and Torre Pacheco.

The Monumento al Pescador in Los Alcazares The monument stands in a small group of palm trees on the beach of El Espejo, close to the church of La Ascunción in Plaza Virgen de la Asunción. The sculpture depicts a fisherman dragging a net behind him, the inference being that even after a hard day’s work he is returning home with no catch.

Behind him are two mermaids mounted on seahorses, signifying the two seas of the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor, trying to put a little fish into his nets to make the day worthwhile. This is one of the most photographed monuments or locations in Los Alcázares!
