ARCHIVED - Thursday Covid-19 update: over 56,000 cases in Spain as the death toll rises above 4,100
8,500 new confirmed cases but the first drop in daily fatalities in the last week
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country has risen from 47,610 to 56,188 by Thursday lunchtime, with the number of related fatalities having reached 4,098 after an increase of 655 in the last 24 hours.
Another 3,679 patients were in intensive care (513 more than on Wednesday) among almost 32,000 in hospital, but on the other hand the number of patients given the all-clear has increased by around 1,800 to 7,015.
In the meantime, the crisis is overwhelming the health services in some areas of Spain, especially in Madrid, where intensive care units are now operating at double their maximum capacity and field hospitals have been brought into use to cope with the continued growth in the number of serious cases.
Since the last official update yesterday 265 people have died in Madrid alone (fewer than in the previous 24 hours which is something approaching a positive statistic), pushing the number of fatalities in the region up 2,090 and accounting for just over half of Covid-19 deaths in Spain. There are now 17,166 reported cases in Madrid (and 1,221 patients in intensive care, just 71 more than yesterday) but the reality is that there could be many thousands more, as the system is so overwhelmed that tests are no longer being analysed, if at all.
Here in Murcia the latest totals are 596 cases, 36 patients in intensive care and 8 fatalities, still very low figures in comparison to other areas of Spain.
Thanks to the rapid and strict confinement of members of the public to their homes throughout the country it is hoped that the spread of the virus can be contained, although as stated many times before, the regional health authority is under no illusions that many cases have yet to show symptoms and it will be 2-3 weeks before we see a peak in case numbers.
As a result of this the Spanish government has extended the lockdown until at least 12th April.
The latest available data for the number of Covid-19 cases by region is as follows:
Andalucía: 3,406 (134 fatalities, 134 in intensive care, 77 cured)
Aragón: 1,116 (48 fatalities, 93 in intensive care, 4 cured)
Asturias: 841 (27 fatalities, 34 in intensive care, 40 cured)
Balearic Islands: 660 (17 fatalities, 43 in intensive care, 39 cured)
Canary Islands: 784 (24 fatalities, 45 in intensive care, 18 cured)
Cantabria: 671 (17 fatalities, 26 in intensive care, 14 cured)
Castilla-La Mancha: 3,383 (316 fatalities, 243 in intensive care, 95 cured)
Castilla y León: 3,488 (206 fatalities, 202 in intensive care, 308 cured)
Catalunya: 11,592 (672 fatalities, 1,021 in intensive care, 1,697 cured)
Ceuta: 10 (2 in intensive care)
Comunidad Valenciana 3,200 (167 fatalities, 230 in intensive care, 57 cured)
Extremadura: 969 (58 fatalities, 34 in intensive care, 24 cured)
Galicia: 1,915 (32 fatalities, 86 in intensive care, 47 cured)
Madrid: 17,166 (2,090 fatalities, 1,221 in intensive care, 3,882 cured)
Melilla: 39 (1 fatality, 2 in intensive care)
Murcia: 596 (8 fatalities, 36 in intensive care, 9 cured)
Navarra: 1,411 (49 fatalities, 54 in intensive care, 35 cured)
Basque Country: 3,946 (180 fatalities, 137 in intensive care, 621 cured)
La Rioja: 995 (43 fatalities, 36 in intensive care, 48 cured)

What to do if you are in the Region of Murcia and believe you may have contracted the virus
The regional government has set up a special helpline to supply information to members of the public (900 121212) if they suspect that they may have contracted the virus rather than going straight to hospital or to a medical centre.
Sensible precautions
The advice being issued to members of the public by medical authorities all over the world coincides on the following points:
- Wash hands frequently with either soap and water or a sanitiser gel
- Catch coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues – and throw the tissues away immediately after use before immediately washing your hands!
- If you don’t have a tissue, use your sleeve – and wash the item of clothing used at the next opportunity
- AVOID touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- AVOID close contact with people who are unwell
- Don´t panic!
