ARCHIVED - Tourism in Murcia recognised as top quality: awards triple in the last year alone
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Cartagena, Murcia capital and Mazarrón are among the most prodigious winners of tourist awards
There are 171 new tourist services in the Region of Murcia that have been awarded the distinction of the Integral System of Tourist Quality in Destinations (Sicted), which, together with the 325 that it already had, brings the total number of tourist services distinguished with this quality guarantee in the Region to 496.
The ‘Sicted’ seal distinguishes companies that exceed the minimum required standards of quality in the tourist services they offer.
Taking into account the other related and distinguished tourist establishments, Murcia had a total of 759 establishments recognised for the excellence of their tourist service offering as of the end of 2021.
This means that the number of entities and companies with this seal has tripled in the last three years, from 251 at the end of 2018, to 267 in 2019, 288 in 2020 and 759 in 2021, which represents an increase of 66 percent in the last twelve months alone.
Cartagena, with 57 entities and companies, is the destination with the most Sicted tourist services, followed by Murcia (43), Águilas (29), San Javier (12), Sierra Espuña (13), Mazarrón (10) and Molina de Segura (7).
According to the Director General of Tourism Competitiveness and Quality, Carlos Peñafiel, the Sicted seal is a “recognition of the effort and commitment to quality and continuous improvement, while distinguishing the establishment or service from the competition.”
The award is valid for two years, although it is subject to an annual follow-up evaluation. In this regard, Peñafiel announced that this year aid and grants for tourist-centred businesses in the Region will be increased, “given the willingness and commitment shown by tourist destinations in their efforts to improve the services they offer to tourists.”
Other garlanded tourist destinations in Spain
Murcia is currently the fourth autonomous community with the most Sicted certificates, only surpassed by Andalucía, the Valencian Community and the Basque Country. As in Murcia, there has also been a significant increase in the number of awards given in these popular Spanish regions recent years.
