ARCHIVED - Tuesday Covid-19 update: over 94,000 cases in Spain, 8,149 dead and 19,259 recovered
A record for daily fatalities as the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread
The latest official figures produced by the Spanish government show that the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 throughout the country had risen to 94,417 by 11.30 on Tuesday, with the number of related fatalities having reached 8,189 after a record daily increase of over 849.
Another 5,607 patients were in intensive care (376 more than on Monday), while on the other hand the number of patients given the all-clear has now climbed to 19,259. All of the totals continue to rise and the health services in many areas of Spain are overwhelmed as intensive care units are stretched beyond their limits. More field hospitals are being brought into use to cope with the continued growth in the number of serious cases, and only in a couple of Spain's 17 regions have the numbers of people in intensive care units shown any sign of stabilizing.
In the Region of Murcia the number of new cases reported on Monday was 35 and the death toll has risen to 34. Intensive care is being provided to 59 patients, and just 20 have been pronounced clear of the virus.
Meanwhile, across the country it is confirmed that almost 10,000 medical professionals have been infected or are in preventative quarantine having come in close contact with contagious individuals.
Most frighteningly, regional and national health authorities continue to warn that the worst may be yet to come over the next two weeks, and it is now being assumed that the lockdown will be extended at least by another two weeks until 26th April (although this has NOT happened, contrary to many erroneous posts on social media). Whether the same is applicable to the economic shutdown imposed as of Monday 30th March remains to be seen.
The latest available data for the number of Covid-19 cases by region is as follows:
Andalucía: 5,818 (248 fatalities, 235 in intensive care, 160 recoveries)
Aragón: 2,272 (138 fatalities, 165 in intensive care, 204 recoveries)
Asturias: 1,236 (55 fatalities, 65 in intensive care, 90 recoveries)
Balearic Islands: 1,069 (42 fatalities, 85 in intensive care, 111 recoveries)
Canary Islands: 1,262 (55 fatalities, 94 in intensive care, 57 recoveries)
Cantabria: 1,171 (37 fatalities, 50 in intensive care, 35 recoveries)
Castilla-La Mancha: 6,424 (708 fatalities, 344 in intensive care, 296 recoveries)
Castilla y León: 6,211 (516 fatalities, 325 in intensive care, 1,028 recoveries)
Catalunya: 18,773 (1,672 fatalities, 1,652 in intensive care, 4,966 recoveries)
Ceuta: 34 (1 fatality, 3 in intensive care)
Comunidad Valenciana 5,508 (339 fatalities, 356 in intensive care, 200 recoveries)
Extremadura: 1,628 (133 fatalities, 51 in intensive care, 91 recoveries)
Galicia: 4,039 (84 fatalities, 149 in intensive care, 187 recoveries)
Madrid: 27,509 (3,603 fatalities, 1,514 in intensive care, 9,330 recoveries)
Melilla: 54 (1 fatality, 3 in intensive care)
Murcia: 974 (34 fatalities, 59 in intensive care, 20 recoveries)
Navarra: 2,305 (113 fatalities, 99 in intensive care, 192 cured)
Basque Country: 6,320 (325 fatalities, 307 in intensive care, 1,796 cured)
La Rioja: 1,810 (85 fatalities, 51 in intensive care, 496 cured)
Remember: LOCKDOWN MEANS LOCKDOWN. STAY AT HOME. STAY SAFE AND DO YOUR BIT TO REDUCE THE SPREAD OF CORONAVIRUS.
