article_detailDate Published: 11/09/2020ARCHIVED ARTICLEARCHIVED - Two pre-school nurseries forced to quarantine staff and children in Cartagena
In one case a one year old baby tested positive for Covid, forcing the quarantine of 11 children and two staffThis week one of the biggest worries obsessing Spanish families right across the country is the return to school of over 8 million schoolchildren and all the problems this is causing due to the sudden surge in covid cases across Spain.
Although it’s been reported ad nauseum that children and young people tend to suffer mild or asymptomatic cases of covid, this doesn´t mean that they are not contagious and not able to transmit the virus to other people, and of course, there ARE always exceptions and some children become very ill and even die.
Enormous efforts are being made to isolate children into smaller “bubble groups”, stagger classes, reduce class sizes, implement strict measures to protect children, but all over Spain there have already been classes closed due to positive cases in both staff and pupils and significant problems with parents choosing not to take their children to school at all.
The national Education Minister, Isabel Celaá, said on Thursday that “incidents” had occurred in 53 schools nationally this week, out of the 28,600 schools which have resumed classes, so although dozens of class closures and quarantines have been reported in the first 3 days of the new term, the numbers are relatively small.
For working parents, it’s all a big worry, and the problems extend to the youngest children as well, to the “guarderías” or pre-school nurseries which care for the youngest children, some of them publicly owned.
In Cartagena this week, two of these have already experienced issues:
A one-year-old baby tests positive in a Cartagena nursery
A one-year-old baby attending the Ángel de la Guarda Child Care Center (CAI) in the Nueva Cartagena urbanization in Cartagena tested positive for covid-19 this week, forcing eleven classmates and two staff to be quarantined.
The baby was in contact last Saturday with a relative who subsequently tested positive, and through the contact tracing process was routinely tested and found to be positive.
The center's management contacted the parents of the remaining 11 minors from the class to collect them from the center, and all are now being quarantined along with the staff caring for their group.
2nd case: the Snoopy nursery in Cartagena also quarantined a “bubble group” of 7 children and one staff member on Thursday, after a close relative of one of the children tested positive. All those concerned are now in home quarantine.
Murcian schoolchildren won´t resume classes until Monday, although already the situation is complicated; In Totana the Mayor has requested that the return to class be delayed due to the current situation in the municipality, and in Jumilla and Archivel in Caravaca de la Cruz, children will attend “virtual school” as both areas have been returned to confinement and children are not permitted to attend school presencially in these two areas.
