ARCHIVED - Vega Baja region on orange alert for extreme temps: Alicante weather outlook August 12-15
The mercury is expected to reach 43ºC in Orihuela on Saturday August 13
The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an orange level weather warning for high temperatures in Alicante province this weekend, specifically in the Vega Baja region on Saturday August 13.
According to the Climatological Laboratory of the University of Alicante, thermometers in some municipalities, including Orihuela, could reach a deadly 43ºC.
"The final stretch of the week will be extremely hot as a very warm air mass moves towards the southeast, although it seems that the hottest day will be Saturday, particularly along the coast," warned the experts.
Temperatures will begin to rise on Friday afternoon, creating a torrid and extremely hot atmosphere accompanied by Saharan dust, prompting a warning and 'stay safe' tips from the Security and Emergencies Agency.
The public is advised to: stay out of the sun between 12 noon and 4 pm and avoid physical exercise during the hottest hours; use appropriate sun protection creams; drink plenty of water and control alcohol and caffeine intake; and take the utmost precaution in vehicles, never leaving anyone inside, including pets.
Weekend weather breakdown:
After getting off to a predominantly clear start, the province can expected intervals of high clouds on Friday afternoon (August 12). Minimum temperatures are likely to reamin unchanged, but maximum temperatures will start to rise, except in parts of the coast where they will vary little. Light variable wind, tending south at midday; moderate on the north coast and light on the rest.
Alcoy: 20ºC (min) to 38ºC (max)
Alicante: 24ºC to 34ºC
Denia: 23ºC to 36ºC
Elche: 21ºC to 36ºC
Orihuela: 22ºC to 38ºC
Saturday August 13 will get off to a lightly cloudy or clear start with high cloud expected to build around midday. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are not ruled out in the afternoon, particularly in the northern half of the province, and the mercury will begin to climb accompanied by light to moderate south and northwesterly winds.
Alcoy: 24ºC to 40ºC
Alicante: 25ºC to 39ºC
Denia: 25ºC to 40ºC
Elche: 23ºC to 41ºC
Orihuela: 24ºC to 43ºC
Again, a bit of a cloudy start to Sunday August 14, with a chance of scattered and occasional showers and thunderstorms inland. Thermometers will dip across the province, but especially on the coast, with light to moderate southerly winds; westerly winds are forecast inland.
Alcoy: 22ºC to 37ºC
Alicante: 25ºC to 34ºC
Denia: 24ºC to 35ºC
Elche: 24ºC to 36ºC
Orihuela: 24ºC to 39ºC
Next week will begin with a only a minimal drop in temperatures, around two degrees at best. Monday August 15 is forecast to dawn with light cloud or clear skies and there is a slight chance of scattered showers with thunderstorms later in the day and a light variable wind, predominantly easterly on the coast.

Denia: 24ºC to 34ºC
Elche: 23ºC to 35ºC
Orihuela: 23ºC to 37ºC
