WATCH: Accusations fly over illegal luxury villas in Cabo de Palos

A controversial video claims several “influential” Cartagena figures have ignored planning laws
A prominent politician in Cartagena has taken to social media to highlight three “luxury” chalets which have allegedly been extended to include lavish swimming pools without planning permission in Cabo de Palos.
The video has raised several eyebrows, since president of Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) Cartagena, or the Citizens’ Movement of Cartagena in English, Jesús Giménez Gallo, has alluded that the modern villas have been constructed by “influential” local personalities. Whether these high-profile figures are fellow politicians, businessmen or people who hold public office is anyone’s guess.
The footage takes viewers on a tour of the properties, while Mr Giménez Gallo explains that, since the impressive pools don’t have planning, the homeowners won’t be granted their first occupation licence and the constructions could be demolished by the local council.

While the building work was still in progress, the investors were reportedly notified about the irregularities and told that they wouldn’t be allowed to move in, or have the chalets connected to the water and electricity supply boards, unless the regulations were complied with.
A spokesperson from the municipal government of Cartagena has dismissed the “veiled accusations,” pointing out that if someone has a complaint to make, they should go ahead and do just that. However, they were quick to assure that no local councillor has been involved in the construction of an illegal swimming pool.
The MC Cartagena councillor has demanded the building permission details from the Council to examine the planning, since he firmly believes that “there are privileged people who have their pools in an illegal area and we cannot condone this type of behaviour.”
