Valencia's Day (Oct 9) is also the feast of San Dionisio in the region, traditionally considered the patron saint of lovers
October 9 is traditionally an important date in the Valencia Region's calendar, a day in which the community celebrates its identity and the anniversary of the reconquest of Valencia from the Moors by King James I of Aragon in 1238.
And Denia plans to celebrate the regional holiday in style with a weekend of activities for all the family on Saturday and Sunday, October 8 and 9, including music, children's games, guided tours and a giant paella to share in the street.
The programmed activities organised by the Town Hall will kick off with a concert by the Agrupació Artística Musical de Denia in the Plaza del Consejo on Saturday at 6pm, which will coincide wih Denia Stock Fair to be held in Calle de la Vía on both days.
Sunday October 9 events are as follows:
10.30am: Commemorative act of the Day of the Valencians will take in the Jaime I square with representatives from all municipal political parties participating. The act will be accompanied by performances from the Agrupació Artística Musical de Denia, Dianium Danza, the dulzaina and tabal group Canyà Badà and the Muixeranga de la Marina Alta.
The event will culminate in a performance of the piece Muixerangues al cielo by Agrupació Artística Musica y Caña Badà and dance from Dianium Danza.
For anyone who can't make it, the whole event can be followed live on Denia Town Hall's Facebook page. After midday, a musical parade will make its was along Saladar promenade until it reaches Calle Sagunto, where there will be a dance extravaganza.
2pm: The public will be given the opportunity to sample a giant paella that will be prepared at the intersection of calles Patricio Ferrándiz and Sagunto. This will be followed by a variety of activities in the nearby park and esplanade of Torrecremada. For the little ones, traditional children's games will take place in the park from 5pm.
7pm: The Alcireño group La Fúmiga will give a free concert on the esplanade.
8.45pm: Fireworks display on the Torrecremada esplanade to close the commemorative day.
Over the course of the two days, guided tours around Denia and the Fueros have been organised by the Archaeology and Museums Department. These require prior registration by calling the Ethnological Museum on 966 420 260.
