Free guided tours in Águilas during December

Saturday December 3, guided tour of the historic town centre of Águilas

Start: Tourist Office at 11.00h.

Duration: approximately 2 hours.

This tour takes participants through the port and Plaza de España and past important monuments and buildings, such as the Ícaro (Carnival monument), Ferrocarril monument, Archaeological Museum and church of San José. The tour is suitable for those of limited mobility.

Sunday December 4, Marina de Cope walking tour

Start: the coordinates for the starting point are 37.469325 and -1.499722 at 9.30.

Duration and difficulty: approximately 2 and a half hours; 4.7 kilometres. Low level of difficulty.

This walk takes place in the regional park of Cabo Cope and Puntas del Calnegre, allowing participants to enjoy the natural scenery on offer, as well as walking through nesting areas for different bird species and Roman remains.

Saturday December 10, the Mr Gillman and El Hornillo railways tour

Starts at the Renfe Águilas railway station at 11.00.

Duration: approximately 2 hours.

Bookings: through the Region of Murcia tourist board here.

This tour allows participants to experience the history of the traders and industrialists who played such an important role in the economy of Águilas in the second half of the 19th century and the first 30 years of the 20th, among them Gustavo Gillman. The route includes the Monument to the Railway, the bridge over the Rambla de las Culebras, the Sendero del Hornillo, the museum which has been created in the railway tunnel, the Embarcadero del Hornillo loading jetty and the railway station.

December 4: Maestríssimo, a fast-moving blend of various theatrical and musical genres, including chamber music, comedy, satire and period costume as it portrays the adventures of a string quartet sometime in the 17th or 18th century. December 22: CEIP Mediterráneo primary school Christmas concert, admission free of charge.

December 26: Terpsícore dance school Christmas show, two performances at 19.00 and 20.30. Tickets 5 euros.

December 27: Fariña, a theatre spectacular directed by Tito Asorey at 20.30. Tickets from 15 euros. Not recommended for under 18s.

At the Casa de la Cultura Francisco Rabal

December 3: "Café y algo más: Navidad para todos”. A talk by Sara Pineda on the true meaning of Christmas followed by festive recipes with Pepe Osorio and Lucy Santiago. Starts at 18.00, coffee and Christmas goodies provided!

December 28: Serenade to Paco Rabal at 21.00. Classical guitarists Antonio Jaime García Mengual, Concepción Coll Jara and Vicente J. Sáez Martínez perform in memory of the actor Paco Rabal, one of Águilas' best-known and best-loved sons. Click here for further information.

Christmas shopping promotion in Águilas: 13,000 euros in prizes!

Gastronomy

December 3 and 4: Freshly caught tuna cutting and tasting in Aguilas at Restaurante Casa Bartolo. The cutting begins on the Saturday at 13.00 and on both days visitors have the chance to taste the delicious dishes in which the fish is used. Prior bookings should be made by telephone on 968 419567.

Oficina de Turismo de Águilas

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)

Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.

The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
