article_detailWhere to park a Camper van or high topped car in Cartagena centre
Where to park in Cartagena Centre if you´ve got one of these or a high car.
To be honest, it´s not easy.
Much of the parking in Cartagena is in underground carparks, and the street parking is narrow and difficult for campers to find a wide enough space.
There are 2 places where it is easier to park and leave a van, bit if any of our readers have discovered better places, or more PLEASE email us and we´ll check it out.
Area 1 By the Extranjeria.
The Muelle Alfonso XII is the main waterside area which runs along the seafront in Cartagena . On the opposite side of the road to this is the Muralla del Mar, which encloses the City. As this curves away around the corner opposite the fishing district of Santa Lucia, it opens up into a grassy area, known as the Cuesta del Batel. On this far corner is a building with a watchtower on it, the Extranjeria. behind this and in the street alongside is open air parking. It´s normal to be asked for money by the lads parking cars - our normal stance is to willingly give them a euro providing the car is safe on return and make that clear if asked for money beforehand. don´t give them more than 2 euros, no matter how much they moan, it just makes us all a target.
The link is through to Calle Gisbert, so you see both of these first two parking possibilities. Click Calle Gisbert Cartagena
Area 2. By the old bullring. The Extranjeria is on the corner of Calle Gisbert. Driving down Calle Gisbert, take a sharp right almost opposite the panoramic lift and this is a steep little road which immediately curves back on itself and comes out by the old Plaza de Toros. There is plenty of open space up here in which to leave a camper. This is close to the University buildings which have all been restored and were the former Military Hospital.
Area 3 There is a large patch of waste ground opposite the old Town hall, Monte Sacro, but it´s quite rough to be honest, slopes, and is very uneven. We would definitely not recommend leaving a van at night in this area, but it´s OK in the daytime. It´s a good place to visit the MURAM Museum in Plaza Merced or to walk down to the tourist office in Plaza Bastarreche. To access from the external Cartagena ringroad, drive up the side of the Muralla del Mar and follow it as it curves around to the left, at the big roundabout with the fountain, bear left past the tourist office into Calle San Diego. Take a right into the narrow Sor. F. Armendariz and follow along. You´ll see the waste ground on your left as you approach the end of the road. The main entrance is to turn left at the end and then left into the ground. Again, there are always people asking for money so say you will pay if the vehicle is OK. We´ve parked here many times and never had any problems but it is a last resort for owners of high vehicles.
Click Calle Muralla de Tierra
In all of these locations, we make no guarantees for vehicle safety, these are simply places where it is possible to park higher vehicles which won´t fit into the underground car parks.
If anyone has any more cunning parking places, please share the info and help other people with the same parking issues!
