ARCHIVED - Widespread rain and overcast skies ahead: Spain weather outlook September 26-29
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
The worst of the storms will have passed by Tuesday but Spain is in store for a mostly dreary week
Most of Spain caught a glimpse of the upcoming wintery weather this past weekend as the tail-end of a cyclone blustered in across the Canary Islands, grounding flights, closing schools and causing mass flooding and storm damage to roads, buildings and homes. She’s been downgraded to a subtropical storm, but ‘Hermine’ still leaves the islands of Tenerife, El Hierro and La Palma on red alert throughout Monday September 26.
Elsewhere, Monday will begin cloudy and showery in many parts of the country, with locally strong storms forecast in the Balearic Islands, Alicante, Murcia and the south of Valencia early in the day. These should subside as the morning goes on but could resurface later in the afternoon.
Daytime temperatures will drop in the south of Spain with the arrival of a light northerly wind.
On Monday, Andalucia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia and Valencia are on yellow level alert for heavy rain. A yellow warning has also been issued in the Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Catalonia and the Basque Country for rough seas.
Hermine will begin moving away from the Canary Islands on Tuesday September 27 although the rain will persist throughout the day. The outlook is similar in the rest of the country: cloudy skies and scattered showers are forecast in northern Spain which could spread weakly towards the southern borders in the early afternoon.
It will be a brighter day in southern Spain though, with the thermometers once again climbing to the low-30s in parts of Alicante, Malaga and Murcia. Very few changes are expected to the nighttime temperatures, although these have already decreased considerably in the south.
Yellow weather alerts in place for wind in the Valencian Community and Catalonia and for rough sea conditions in the Balearic Islands.
Much the same on Wednesday September 28, with overcast and showery weather predicted in the north of Spain and on the islands.
The mercury will climb once more, particularly along the eastern coast but a slight drop is expected in the west.
Very strong westerly winds are forecast in the Bay of Biscay, Ampurdán and Alborán which will be far less intense in the rest of the country.
No weather warnings are in place for Wednesday.
Looking ahead to Thursday September 29 and the humid air flow is expected to continue in the north, bringing cloudy skies and occasional showers. The Mediterranean area will also be mostly overcast, with some rain and storms predicted in the Balearic Islands and eastern Catalonia in the morning, moving south to the Valencian Community and the Region of Murcia during the afternoon.
The thermometers will drop throughout the day in almost all of Spain but will increase very slightly at night in the southeast.
No weather alerts have been issued for Thursday.
