The Region of Murcia offers a series of mainly free guided walks and visits to places of historical and natural interest right across the region throughout the year.
Most of the activities shown are free of charge, and can be booked by contacting the tourist offices concerned, details of which are shown on each individual article.
Alternatively, use the links provided through to the online booking system. In case of any query about start point or timings, contact the tourist offices of the municipalities concerned.
On most of the routes the commentary is in SPANISH although some of the guides will speak some English, but it’s worth viewing these routes as a good reason to visit a new area and spend some time exploring, and maybe return to visit places of interest seen as part of this preliminary visit.
In some cases the guides will offer English language commentary if requested: it really does vary from one route to another.
In most cases, the Tourist Offices do have some leaflets in English, and you'll often find information boards in English as well. It's worth speaking to the office concerned if you're organising visits for groups outside of this schedule and would like to bring a group of people to follow the same route.
There are also a number of guided routes offered in English: see feed below.
See individual town pages for full details.
In many cases further information about the locations on offer can be found on the www.murciatoday.com site written up in English. Links are provided where appropriate from the individual articles.
Further information about each visit written in English can be found via the municipality (town) headings shown in the subjects column.
An automated booking system is available in SPANISH or contact Englsh speaking tourist offices to book. Full details of how to book each individual route is shown on the pages for each route, accessed by searching the town or municipality in which the routes are offered. ( Use subject headings)
You can search and book walks and activities directly below.

It's worth a visit even in Spanish as the mine and park itself are very interesting if you can´t join an English language tour.)
The Parque Minero mining park in the La Unión municipality is a unique attraction in the Murcia Region, taking visitors 80 metres below surface level and deep into the heart of the Mina Agrupa Vicenta, on a journey into the mining past of La Unión.
Visitors climb up to the mine entrance in a train, viewing areas in which the minerals extracted were crushed and washed prior to smelting, before descending into the mine to learn about the mining history of this area, which has been exploited for more than 2000 years for its mineral wealth.
The Romans funded their Punic Wars and dominance of Europe from silver extracted from the mines of La Unión, more than 30,000 slaves working in the dark to mine a variety of minerals.
Visits to the mine can only be undertaken in the company of a guide, and visits for groups can be arranged at times to suit.

The route departs at 9am from outside the Old Public Marketplace in La Unión ( Click for map; Antiguo Mercado Publico La Unión).
The Carretera del 33 is a seven-kilometre walk through the mountains of the Sierra Minera between La Unión and the coastal town of Portmán, taking walkers on a journey through the spectacular countryside of the hills but also through the history of the mines in this part of the Costa Cálida.
The road was built in 1933 (hence its name) in order to provide direct links from the main mines in the Sierra to the port in Portmán, and at the same time provided employment for miners who had lost their livelihoods as a result of the general economic slump in the 1920s. When completed it soon formed the backbone of the mining industry of Cartagena and La Unión, and quickly became one of the best known features of the area. Nowadays it is very popular with walkers, particularly those who are looking for a day out from their bases in nearby La Manga Club or on the shores of the Mar Menor. Despite its route through the mountains it is described as “easy”, and usually lasts approximately three hours, although the first part is hard on the legs climbing up to the Mina Agrupa Vicenta through the mining park.
There is parking at the foot of the Parque Minero mining park.

Discover why Lorca celebrates Saint Patrick’s Day
This is an interesting little story, and it will come as a surprise to many that Lorca has been celebrating St. Patrick’s Day since 1452.
The story goes back to 711 when the Visigoth overlords who ruled what is now southern Spain, were engaged in a power struggle and one party made the fatal error of seeking military aid from the Moors across the sea in modern day Morocco.
What started out as an alliance soon became an occupation and by 713 all of southern Spain was ruled by the Moors. They remained here for 500 years until the Christian forces of the Reconquist from Castile y León and Aragón in the north of Spain pushed them back into one last kingdom: Granada. In those days Lorca was a frontier town, the borders with Granada close to the city and skirmishes were frequent.
On the 17th of March of 1452, a major battle took place: the Battle of Alporchones in which the two sides clashed in a large-scale fight to the death. The army belonging to the Emirate of Granada, led by Malik ibn al-Abbas, was defeated by the Castilian troops of Alonso Fajardo el Bravo, head of the house of Fajardo, which is one of the most important names in Mediaeval Murcia and crops up time and time again in relation to various castles and even the Cathedral in Murcia, which has a stunningly beautiful chapel built by this family.
This date became one of the most significant in the history of the city and the decision was taken to build the magnificent St. Patrick’s Collegiate, dedicated to the saint, as a result.
Today St. Patrick’s Collegiate in Lorca is the third largest church dedicated to the patron saint of Ireland, along with Dublin and New York Cathedrals.
What does the tour include?
Traditionally in Lorca, the Irish flag together with the Spanish flag were raised in the Plaza de España in front of the Colegiata de san Patricio on the 17th of March but, since 2012, the event takes place in Plaza de Calderón nearby.
- During the morning there will be a display of typical Irish games and dancing by pupils of the Mercedarias Madre de Dios School in the Plaza de España.
- The raising of the Irish and Spanish flags will take place in Calderón Square coinciding with the celebration of the local Police fiestas, as St Patrick is also the patron saint of the police. Both National Anthems will also be played by the Local Band of Music
- A guided walk to the Plaza de España with commentary about the façade and courtyard of the Guevera Palace.
- Once reaching the Plaza de España commentary will be given about the square, “Pósito”, “Corregidor’s House”, and Town Hall
- Refreshment will be offered in the Irish Pub Phelan’s in the Plaza de España (1 Guinness)
- An official guide will explain the history of the famous battle of Los Alporchones and tell the audience about St. Patrick’s Cathedral (both in Spanish and English)
-Followed by invitation to enjoy an Irish Coffee in the Irish Pub O’Neill
Who can participate? Anyone who enjoys tourism and culture is welcome to come along, Irish or not.

Cabezo Gordo
Route name: VISITA GUIADA GRATUITA AL CABEZO GORDO
Dates 2017 ; 19th February, 17th June, 6th August, 12th November,
Guided visit of the Cabezo Gordo, one of the most important prehistoric excavation sites in the Murcia Region, including entry to the base of the Neanderthal excavation area, the Cueva del Agua. Visit in Spanish although the archaeologists at the site do speak English.
Torre Pacheco is the home to the Sima de las Palomas archaeological site, located in the vast Cabezo Gordo, the striking lump of rock ( marble) which rears up from the flat plains surrounding Torre Pacheco.
This special excavation has valuable pre-human remains which date back to the Neanderthal period, 40-60,000 years ago, but has also yielded remains dating back to the inter-glacial period of 120,000-130,000 years BC, which it is believed may belong to the Pre-Neanderthal forebears, the Homo Heidelbergensis. Over 150 individual fossilized human remains have been discovered, which belong to 8 or 9 individuals, and some extremely important remains have been discovered which belong to individuals who were buried beneath a rock fall whilst inside the caves.
There are also bones from lions, panthers, hippopotamus, hyenas, rhinos, horses, tortoises rabbits and birds, all of which lived in this area and many tools which would have been used by our distant ancestors in the course of their daily lives for hunting, fishing, and processing their prey.
The Cabezo Gordo itself is a mountain of marble, which towers above the plains and was mined extensively for both stone and minerals until 1917.
It's about a 10 minute walk up a fairly steep hillside to get to the entrance of the excavations, so don't go along unless you can make the walk and wear strong, sensible shoes, as the path is finished with a loose stone surface.
Location
From Torre Pacheco, take the F-22 towards Balsicas, then the F-26 towards Los Alcazares, and then the camino SIVt1, which is signposted for the Sima de las Palomas. Basically, you're heading for the foot of the huge rocky outcrop which dominates the orange plains.

Route 4: La Bastida: The Western Troy
Every weekend, Saturday and Sunday. see feed below for availability
The La Bastida Argaric site in Totana is open at the weekends for those who would like to visit this impressive archaeological complex.
This is a tantalising site for archaeologists as just 15% of the total surface area covered by this Bronze Age settlement has been excavated to date, the remainder of what would once have been home to nearly 1,000 people still buried beneath three and a half thousand years of soil and vegetation.
The Argaric culture is one of the great mysteries of Bronze Age Europe and archaeologists working at the site admit that the more they learn about this intriguing culture, the more questions they have.
The site was first discovered back in 1869 and although civil engineer Rogelio de Inchaurrandieta uncovered 20 graves, its significance was not fully understood until 1886 when two Belgian brothers, Henri and Louis Seret undertook investigative work on the site as there appeared to be a link to other sites they were investigating in the province of Almería, over the border in Andalucía. Artefacts had a uniformity which indicated a cultural parity between a number of sites and finally the culture was designated the “Argaric Culture”following the excavation of a first major settlement at El Algar.
Since then further sites have come to light and it is now known that the Argaric Culture covered all of Almería, much of Murcia, parts of Granada and Jaén and along the coast into Alicante province in the Comunidad Valenciana.
Tours begin at 10.00 and 12.00 and are in Spanish, although English speaking visitors can register with the tourist office and once a group has been formed an English language visit can also be arranged. Group bookings can also be arranged with an English speaking guide.
