MURCIA MURALLA VISITORS CENTER
The Muralla de Murcia is a reference of first order in the tourist and cultural offer of the city.
The center hosts a section of the medieval walls of Murcia in which it is possible to appreciate the evolution that over the centuries experienced the urban defenses.
In these transformations and adaptations of the wall to the needs of the city is summarized the history of Murcia: its foundation in the s. IX, its development in the s. XII, the Castilian conquest in the mid-s. XIII, its frontier character during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, and finally the disappearance of defensive needs after the union of the kingdoms of Castile and Aragon and the conquest of the Nasrid sultanate of Granada at the end of the s. XV, its decay and disuse in later centuries and its rehabilitation as an urban element in the late s. XX.
The historical importance of the Wall of Santa Eulalia as well as the singularity of the architectural intervention show the respect to the archaeological remains that are in situ and that allow to relate with the spaces in which they were.
The Center is located on an open excavation in the Plaza de Santa Eulalia next to the Hermitage of San José. In this excavation, of about 110 m2, remains of the Arab wall of the s. XII, on which during the s. XV was built a new wall coinciding at this point with the access tower. This project places us in a first phase of action of the entire archaeological environment, which will be considered in the near future as new performances in other contiguous deposits, about 50 m2 total, and the Arab necropolis located in the same square about 25 meters Away. All these archaeological stations were connected in the origin, reason why the project contemplates the global action by phases of all the zone, proposing a communication through subterranean galleries.
The Center consists of several rooms in which virtually daily life is recreated in medieval Murcia. Through a guided tour and through plasma screens, infographics and models the visitor can go back centuries back in time to know the evolution of the wall from the Islamic era to the Christian.
