EL BARRIO DEL CARMEN. SHOPPING DISTRICT
EL BARRIO DEL CARMEN. SHOPPING DISTRICT
Barrio del Carmen district came into being in the 17th century, part of the initial expansion of the city of Murcia. In the second half of the 19th century, the deployment of the railway boosted the development of industry in the area, leading to commercial growth. Although trade has evolved over time in Barrio del Carmen, it has been able to maintain this tradition and indeed some of the oldest businesses in the city of Murcia can still be found in the district.

Murcia - Square by Square
Of the Murcia of the blue minarets, palaces, gardens, public bathhouses, orchards and narrow twisting lanes, sheltered from the winds and silent, there are still corners to be found, rampart walks and nooks which make us a gift of their cool shade.

Moors and Christians in Murcia
Moors and Christians in Murcia
In 1495, the Council of the city of Murcia announced the festival of Saint Patrick, declaring that “the young men shall join the procession in the habit of Moors, as was their custom”. This tells us that the tradition existed before this date, beginning perhaps with the victory of Christian troops from Murcia over the Muslims of Granada, at the Battle of Alporchones, on Saint Patrick’s Day 1452, which led to that figure being declared the patron saint of Murcia and its kingdom.

The first walls of Murcia were constructed not long after the year 825 AD, when the city was founded. This primitive enclosure, built from rammed earth, was replaced some time in the 12th century by a more solid structure made from concrete. The new wall was reinforced with towers and by a second lower defensive line, known as a ravelin, or outwork, in front of which ran a moat.

MURCIA AND ITS HISTORY
MURCIA AND ITS HISTORY
In the Bronze Age, the area around what is now Murcia was inhabited, as shown by the archaeological finds at Verdolay, Beniaján or Monteagudo. El Cabecico del Tesoro also provides evidence of the large number of people in the area. Under the Romans, the fertile ‘huerta’ farmland became established as an area of settlement and agriculture. The Martyrium in La Alberca, dating from the fourth century, and the remains of the Basilica of Algezares, from the sixth, are two monuments which indicate the presence of Christianity.

The Murcia we see today, the Murcia of the 21st century, is the heir to a great past. T he streets, monuments, buildings, river… they all form an indelible part of the city of Murcia. And while the passage of time has left its mark, the city conserves in the hearts of its inhabitants the best possible testament to its history. In the 21st century, Murcia continues to cultivate its history and traditions far beyond those dates when we celebrate important events such as Holy Week, Corpus Christi or the pilgrimage to Fuensanta. Murcia is open every day, ready to welcome those who wish to learn more about us.

The CATHEDRAL OF MURCIA
The CATHEDRAL OF MURCIA
The CATHEDRAL OF MURCIA epitomises more than 600 years of art history. Its construction, on the site of the city’s Great Mosque, began in 1394 and was concluded in 1462, the year when its vaulted roof was completed. From that date until the end of the 18th century, a number of alterations and additions were made to the structure, and the building we see today incorporates several artistic styles.

MUSEO SALZILLO Referente cultural y artístico es, en su género, uno de los más importantes del panorama español. El más valorado y visitado de la ciudad de Murcia está dedicado a uno de los escultores señeros del barroco.
