Ayuntamiento de Cieza -Cieza Town Hall
Casa Consistorial de Cieza
Construction of the Casa Consistorial in Cieza was a lengthy process, which began at the end of the 19th century and was not finally concluded until 1920.
The building was designed by architect, Justo Millán, in an eclectic style, and today has three floors and an ochre exterior with white decorations and neo-baroque lines, very typical of modernistic buildings of its era across the Region of Murcia.
It has been the home of Cieza town hall, the Casa Consistorial, since its completion in 1920, and has been linked to the important figures of both civic and public life from the start . Many of these important citizens are remembered in the Salon de Plenos, which is the main council meeing chamber, in the form of marble plaques, Don Antonio Cánovas del Castillo, being one such example.
in 1873, during the initial phases of construction of the Casa Consistorial, a new bell tower was built onto the Basílica de la Asunción, by José Marín Baldó, giving added importance to the plaza in front of both buildings, which was used to house the weekly market and even as a bullring on occasion.
This is now the Plaza Mayor of Cieza, with the Town hall on one side and the main centre of worship, the Basílica de la Asunción, on the other.
