Los Belones lies within the Cartagena municipality, and is in the administrative district of Rincón de San Ginés, which covers an area from Los Belones right the way down to Cabo de Palos in the far east of the municipality.
Although it has a long and interesting history, the village revolves today around two core activities: tourism and agriculture.
While Los Belones itself is slightly inland from the Mar Menor so therefore lacks its own beaches, it is close to the glorious sandy beaches and safe bathing of the Mar Menor, as well as within easy driving distance of the Mediterranean beaches of not only the La Manga Strip, but also of Calblanque.
It is close to the main arterial roads which run into the historic city of Cartagena with excellent shopping facilities, and along the fringe of the Mar Menor, linking it into Los Alcázares, San Javier, San Pedro del Pinatar, Cabo de Palos and onto the La Manga strip, meaning it is also within a 20 minute drive of the regional airport at San Javier, and about one hour 20 minutes from Alicante-Elche.
It is well serviced with medical facilities, has a weekly market of its own, a church, social centre and annual fiestas in honour of San Isidro.
The village centre itself has good shopping facilities and services, and is the closest shopping area for residents of, and visitors to, the exclusive and extensive La Manga Club facility. This has 3 golf courses, a large training facility for football, rugby, cricket and tennis, a 5 star hotel, spa and leisure centre, an extensive residential area and a separate holiday village with properties to let as well as good commercial shopping and restaurant facilities.
Los Belones is a popular residential area for “residential tourists” with many social clubs and social support close at hand throughout the Mar Menor area.
