Basic Visitor information for San Pedro del Pinatar
Tourism Information San Pedro del Pinatar.
The municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar covers an area of 21.7 square kilometres, and possesses 14 kilometers of coastline, with beaches on both the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor.
It has been popular as a destination for Spanish visitors since the 1960´s, and during the summer period is busy and buzzing, with hotels and apartments packed with holidaymakers.
Much of its accommodation is small-medium sized pensions and hotels, or privately owned apartments and duplexes, although there is also accommodation available at the luxury end of the market.
The town itself is divided into 2 distinct sections, the main urban nucleus of San Pedro del Pinatar set back from the seafront, and the coastal section which hugs the fringes of the Mar Menor, Lo Pagán being the heart of the tourism industry in the town, an area with its own unique identity. Many of the hotels and tourism orientated businesses are in this coastal section.
San Pedro del Pinatar has 3 main tourism attractions; it´s beaches, mud baths and health tourism and the natural salinas park which has defined its identity for more than 2500 years.
Beaches:
Beaches are divided between the Mediterranean and Mar Menor, offering two distinct styles of beach based holiday. The med beaches are vast, open spaces, accessed via natural walkways through the sand dunes and salinas park, appealing to those seeking space, rolling waves and a place to be at one with nature, but with all the mod cons and conveniences of a family break within easy reach.
The second is the safety of the Mar Menor, Europe´s largest inland salt water expanse, shallow fringed sandy beaches, safe family bathing, with warm water, gently lapping waves and the security of lifeguard protection and first aid facilities.
San Pedro del Pinatar has 14 kilometres of beaches, split between these different options, guaranteeing those seeking a beach on which to relax, a wide and varied choice.

Mud Baths and health tourism.
The famous Baños de Lodo, or mud baths, have been attracting those seeking healthy bathing for centuries, the rich muds filled with minerals, bringing not only benefits to the skin, but a soothing tonic for those suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, broken bones and skin conditions. Their presence has spawned other establishments offering spa and health treatments, and these attract a steady flow of health tourism traffic throughout the year.

Parque Regional de Las Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar
This is a wetland area which includes salt flats, dunes and beaches between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean. It´s one of the most important locations in San Pedro del Pinatar, and has been declared a regional park for its environmental importance and the wildlife it holds and is a magnet for lovers of walking, cycling and wildlife, as well as a welcoming environment for families.

The Mar Menor
The Mar Menor itself is the lifeblood of San Pedro del Pinatar, feeding it with the salt which nourishes the salt flats and supports the important salt production industry which has been a backbone of the local economy for more than 2000 years.
However it has also provided safe shelter for shipping and supported a fishing industry in the town, an industry which is still very much a part of the local economy today. But the Mar Menor also provides a safe haven for those who enjoy watersports, and is a base for those who would like to learn to sail, windsurf, kitesurf or canoe, and there are also a number of diveschools along its coastline.
The municipality also has moorings and yacht marinas for watersports enthusiasts and boat owners.
Historical San Pedro del Pinatar.
Although San Pedro del Pinatar has been inhabited continuously for 2500 years, it only developed into a substantial urban nucleus in the mid 19th century. The most complete home remaining from this period is the Palacio of the Barón Benifayó, which is today the Municipal Museum. ( Click Municipal Museum)
The other property of interest is the Casa del Reloj, now a restaurant, an interesting house built by Pedro Cerdán for the wealthy Servet family, ( Click Casa del Reloj) and the municipality is also home to a Roman Villa, La Raya. ( Click La Raya.)
