The 2021 fiestas make a partial return to Alhama after the online events of 2020
Throughout Spain and the rest of Europe, May Day celebrations are held to mark the spring and the arrival of a period of fertility and abundance. Their roots lie firmly in the pagan past, although in Spain and other Catholic countries they have been absorbed into the Christian, and in Alhama de Murcia the fiestas of Los Mayos were declared as being of National Tourism Interest in 2019 due to the unique traditions at their core.
Los Mayos are tableaux featuring figures made from fabrics and stuffed with whatever is available, nowadays mainly straw, dressed and set in scenes which represent everyday life. All around the town displays are created which show residents involved in traditional activities; sitting sewing outside their houses, working in their gardens, or just chatting to each other. They are charming and homely and are often allied with a satirical twist, poking fun at local dignitaries or putting across a point of view about social subjects.
Unfortunately, the 2020 edition had to be held online due to the lockdown during the first wave of the coronavirus pandemic, but for 2021 it has been possible to recover at least to a certain degree the events and participation which characterize Los Mayos in “normal” years. The limited program of events which has been decided on, including the Mayos themselves but not the traditional “Corremayos”, is as follows:
Thursday 29th April
21.30: Canto a la Cruz de los Mayos. The "Villa de Alhama" folk group sing a welcome to the Crosses of May. Location: Calle Alfonso X el Sabio, nº 35. The number of people permitted to attend will be limited by Covid-19 protocols.
Friday 30th April
21.00: The 20th annual Alhama en Concierto folk festival features Malvariche with their show “Abonico”. Again, Covid protocols will limit the size of the seated audience in the open-air municipal auditorium. Tickets can be acquired from the Museo Arqueológico Los Baños and the council department of Festejos in the Casa de Cultura.
Saturday 1st May
9.00 to 14.00: The “plantá” takes place in the streets, squares and parks of Alhama de Murcia, and Covid protocols will be in place for those visiting the Mayos as they are installed and set up. Visits are also permitted during the afternoon and evening until the start of the night-time curfew.
10.00 to 21.00: The Los Mayos arts and crafts and natural produce market in the Plaza de la Constitución.
15.00 to 20.00: The Los Mayos tourist train follows a route featuring the Mayos tableaux at regular intervals during the afternoon, setting out from Avenida de la Constitución. Tickets are priced at just 1 euro and of course the number of passengers will be limited by Covid protocols. The train will be disinfected after each trip and facemasks must be worn.
Tickets should be pre-booked through the Town Hall website ayuntamiento.alhamademurcia.es.
21.00: The 20th annual Alhama en Concierto folk festival continues with a performance by Juan José Robles, who presents numbers from his latest disc “In-quietud”. Again, Covid protocols will limit the size of the seated audience in the municipal auditorium. Tickets can be acquired from the Museo Arqueológico Los Baños and the council department of Festejos in the Casa de Cultura.
Sunday 2nd May, the Day of Los Mayos
The Mayos remain in place in the streets, squares and parks of Alhama de Murcia, as are the Covid protocols for those visiting the displays.
10.00 to 20.00: The Los Mayos tourist train runs throughout the day, setting out from Avenida de la Constitución. Covid protocols and precautions are the same as those established for Saturday afternoon.
10.00 to 21.00: The Los Mayos arts and crafts and natural produce market continues in the Plaza de la Constitución.
10.30 and 11.00: “Encuentros en el Castillo”, guided tours of the castle of Alhama de Murcia. Group sizes are limited and prior booking is required at the tourist office (telephone 968 633512) or online. Price: 3 euros for adults, 2 euros for children aged 3 to 12.
The visits last approximately 90 minutes.
Sunday 9th May
20.30: The 37th Los Mayos Folklore Festival at the Auditorio Municipal ‘Tierno Galván’, organized by the Villa de Alhama folk group. Covid protocols will limit the size of the seated audience in the municipal auditorium. Tickets can be acquired from the Museo Arqueológico Los Baños and the council department of Festejos in the Casa de Cultura.
Note: Sars-CoV-2 protocols
For the events at the Auditorio Municipal the audience will remain seated and the following protocols will be in place in order to minimize risks to public health:
• The numbers of people permitted to attend are limited.
• The wearing of facemasks is obligatory at all times.
• Hydro-alcohol gel will be available at entry points and in shared spaces.
• Admission and exit procedures will be orderly and gradual in order to avoid the formation of crowds, and people are requested to maintain social distancing at all times and to pay attention to the instructions given by staff.
• Adequate signage will be in place in order to facilitate rapid entrance and exit.
• Attendees should arrive at least half an hour in advance as it will take longer than usual for the audience to be admitted and make their way to their seats.
• Attendees should not move their seats unless instructed to do so by members of staff.
