ARCHIVED - 3.1-magnitude earthquake in Molina de Segura and Murcia this morning
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
Those who felt the quake at 3am last night said it sounded like an “explosion” that kept them awake all night
An earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale, with its epicentre in Molina de Segura, occurred at 2.56am on Thursday April 7.
Thankfully, the earthquake has caused no personal injury and, for the moment, no significant material damage has been reported, according to the councillor for Local Police, Public Safety and Civil Protection.
However, the police headquarters received many calls from residents alarmed by the quake, which could be felt in several towns around the area. The Emergency Coordination Centre received a further 13 calls, 11 of them from Molina, one from Archena and another from the Civil Protection of Fortuna, but none of them were related to significant incidents.
There were three smaller earthquakes in Murcia last weekend, in Alhama, Librilla and Pliego, but all of them measured lower than 1.7 on the Richter scale, nearly half the strength of the earthquake in Molina this morning.
The earthquake originated at a depth of 12 kilometres, according to data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN), and was felt most intensely in areas of Alguazas, Molina de Segura, Lorquí, Archena, and Murcia capital.
Locals were startled awake by the noise. Social networks referred to it as being like an “explosion”.
“The bed shook and I couldn’t sleep all night,” said Fina, a resident of the San Antonio neighbourhood of Molina.
However, the tremor lasted just a few seconds and then stopped.
The earthquake was felt not only in the city centre, but also in the rural districts of Molina. This was witnessed by Evelyn, a resident of La Espada who was woken up by the seismic movement. “My dogs wouldn’t stop barking,” she said.
The tremor was also felt in other towns in the Vega Media and even, to a lesser extent, in Murcia capital city, with residents of multi-storey buildings saying they felt the tremors more intensely: “It was certainly strong enough to shake these buildings,” said Isabel, a resident of the Plaza de Europa building in Molina.
The Civil Protection service of Molina de Segura has reminded people that if there is a serious earthquake, they should take shelter under a table or desk and stay away from windows and things that are likely to break or fall.
If you are outside and there is an earthquake, keep away from powerlines, walls and buildings. If you are driving, stop the vehicle immediately, as soon as it is safe to do so, and wait until the tremors have stopped.
