ARCHIVED - 4.8 million Pfizer vaccines will arrive in Spain during April; over half a million were delivered on Monday
The Ministry of Health states that 546,390 doses of the vaccine have arrived on Monday
The aim of the Spanish Ministry of Health is to ramp-up the vaccinations programme as quickly as vaccines are made available and reach 70 per cent of the adult population by the summer and on Monday Health Minister, Carolina Darias, announced a "very important increase" in the arrival of Pfizer vaccines during April.
On Monday (March 8) just over half a million Pfizer vaccines were delivered (546,390) and these are already on their way to the health services of the 17 autonomous regions who will administer them.
The Minister also said on Monday that Pfizer will be increasing their supply to Spain substantially during April, "supplying 4.8 million vaccines alone in April, around 1.2 million per week," she assured, which will more than double current shipments
“We knew that limited doses would arrive in the first quarter, but we also know that in the second trimester there will be a very important increase, "she said during an interview with Cadena Ser radio on Monday.
As of Friday, Spain had administered 4,471,577 vaccines, with 1,342,485 people having reeived two doses, so although the rate of vaccination is increasing slightly, the programme is still rolling out at a a slow pace, held up by the same lack of vaccines that has been the problem since December.
However, Spain now has more people protected than infected, the Spanish government said during the week.
The Spanish government has confirmed this week that a further 17 million doses of the Moderna vaccine are to be acquired on top of the 16 million doses already purchased from Moderna, and the projection is now that 5.7 million doses will be received during the third quarter of 2021 and the remainder in the final three months of the year.
The European Medicines Agency is close to completing its evaluation of the Janssen vaccine, produced by the Belgian subsidiary of the American pharmaceuticals company Johnson & Johnson.
The EMA experts are set to meet on 11th March to reach their final conclusions regarding the safety, efficiency and quality of the Janssen product, and if their verdict is a positive one then the recommendation will be made for the European Commission to grant a licence for its widespread use among the general population. This would make the Janssen the fourth to gain the approval of the EMA, following those produced by Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca and would give Spain another vaccine from which stock can be purchased.
Of course, foreign residents are only interested in when they will receive their vaccines, but this is also proving to be a contentious topic as foreign nationals are not included in any of the pre-determined groups for vaccination and the regional governments are being left to determine how they will handle the situation in their own regions.
The Andalusian authorities put the cat among the pigeons this week by announcing that the region will not be vaccinating anybody who isn’t registered with the Andalusian Health System (SAS) and proclaiming that those affected would either have to return to their countries of origin for vaccination or contact their consulates to regularise their situation.
Other regions appear to be more understanding, however, with the authorities in Murcia and Valencia both quickly pointing out that they’re working on plans to ensure that the entire population is vaccinated.
At the moment, access to coronavirus vaccines appears to depend on having a Regional Health Identification Code (CIAS) number rather than being registered on the ‘padrón’ (town hall residents register). Those with a ‘health card’ who are fully registered with the health system should have no problem receiving their vaccination and will be contacted by the health services once it’s their turn (by age group),and the regional health authority is studying how to make sure that those who don’t have cards get their injections too, as the goal is to ensure that everyone is included.
Foreign residents in the Valencian region look likely to be able to expect something similar, as the regional president, Ximo Puig, has said that British expats (and people from other countries) will all get their vaccines regardless of whether they are registered with the regional health system or not.
The principal problem for British nationals lies with those who technically shouldn´t even be here; those who have failed to register their residency in Spain before Brexit even though they live here full-time and are not "in the system". There are also many British nationals here who have applied for residency but are not yet "in the system" and of course, there are early retirees who are paying for private health insurance and are not entitled to a vaccine through these schemes.
Given the current supply of vaccines, it's unlikely that those in the 60+ age group will be vaccinated before May/June, although as stated by the Minsiter above, the supply of vaccines is due to increase substantially in the second quarter and mass roll-outs are planned in most regions depending on the supply situation.
