How to avoid the pitfalls of renting a vehicle in Spain this summer

As a holiday destination, Spain has a vast a varied landscape on offer and for many, renting a car and exploring is the ideal option. However, an increase in demand coupled with the global scarcity of semiconductors and vehicle means that hire car availability has been reduced by around 40%.

For tourists planning to hit the open road this summer, the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) in Spain has listed its top tips for car rental customers.

1. Make your booking as early as possible

With the evident shortage of rental vehicles, it makes sense not to hang around. As soon as you know your holiday details, book your hire car to avoid disappointment.

It may seem early to be thinking about booking the hire car already, but by planning ahead you can ensure that you get the car you need.

2. Compare prices

The cost of renting a car will vary widely between companies and from place to place, with businesses in cities and touristy spots often charging a premium.

Local, reputable car rentals can often be cheaper than the big names, so it pays to do your research. Before committing, shop around online and make sure to check the fine print for any additional charges.

3. Request the basic rental contract

Most rental companies offer several options, ranging from the most basic (and cheapest) to premium. Select the smallest car that meets your needs and opt for the basic contract with its clauses and exceptions.

4. Check for flexible cancellation

Sometimes, through no fault of your own, you may be forced to cancel your rental. Maybe your flight is grounded or (heaven forbid) you fall ill. Whatever the case, travel always comes with an element of uncertainty.

To safeguard against any last-minute changes, select a rental company that offers a flexible cancellation policy. Many offer this service free of charge or for a small fee.

5. Know your rights around insurance

According to the OCU, when you have selected your policy, the company can’t later force you to extend your insurance coverage to a higher rate, although many try. It’s also vital that you check the fine print to see how much is charged for insurance excess, as many companies charge as much as 1,000 euros for which they will put a hold on your credit card until you return the vehicle.

This possibly isn’t the place to skimp, however, as the OCU has reported that 7% of customers experience some kind of accident or incident while renting a car.
