A wet week in southern Spain: Andalucia weather forecast May 22-28
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
There is a chance of flooding in Andalucía as non-stop rain is forecast for much of the region
There are many Spanish idioms about the weather (they’re as obsessed with it as the Brits are said to be), but one springs to mind as we face another wet week in May: ‘Cuando marzo mayea, mayo marcea’. It basically means that when we have May-like weather in March, then we have March-like weather in May.
That couldn’t be more true for this year, as we had glorious warm sunshine and a too-dry March that left drought conditions in Andalucía, and now in May we are getting torrential rainfall, thunderstorms and hail.
It will be raining almost all week long almost everywhere in Andalucía. For Monday May 22 and Tuesday 23, at least, weather warnings have been issued in Almeria for rain, storms and hail, with predictions of rainfall of up to 30mm/hour gale force 7 winds.
As yet, no weather alerts have been put in place for Wednesday, but these alerts are only issued a maximum of three days in advance and the system is constantly updated, so there could still be weather warnings for later in the week too.
Right now, the weather forecast is for a somewhat drier Thursday morning, along with a sunny and bright Friday May 26 and Saturday morning. Despite the rain, temperatures will still be around the mid-20s during the day in most places, and will even reach as high as 30ºC in Écija in Seville on Friday.
However, these episodes of sunshine will really be blips between the rains, and we can expect more widespread rainfall on Saturday afternoon and all of Sunday.
When the rains are this persistent, sudden and heavy, many parts of Spain that have become parched and unused to receiving rain can easily flood.
For that reason, Emergency and Civil Protection Services are recommending that people not drive unless absolutely necessary, and if you are out on the roads be sure never to drive through large bodies of water, especially if you don’t know how deep they are or if there could be fast-running currents.
