Águilas beaches: Playa del Sombrerico
The Playa del Sombrerico is one of a string of undeveloped beaches in Aguilas
The Playa del Sombrerico is one of a long series of unspoilt and picturesque beaches and coves which lie on the eastern coast of the municipality between the headland of Cabo Cope in the south and the Playa de la Galera, which marks the boundary with Lorca a few kilometres further north.
Like almost all of the dozen or so beaches on this stretch of the coastline, its location and the lack of easy access goes hand in hand with there being no facilities to speak of, although this beach is at least rather easier to reach than some. In addition there are houses visible from the sand, an unusual feature on this part of the coastline, and in summer there is sometimes a bar open behind the sand although it is advisable to bring a picnic unless you doin´t mind driving back out to the main road to find a "venta".

However there are no “mod cons” such as showers, slatted wooden walkways or beach bars, and neither is there a lifeguard point.
This is a relatively popular destination compared to some of the smaller coves in the area, due to the ease of reaching it from the D-15 road. Cars can be parked on the sand itself, although the best advice is to stick near the back of the beach to avoid the wheels getting stuck!
The Playa del Sombrerico is listed as 100 metres long and the sandy surface continues for some distance offshore. This makes for easy and safe bathing, and this is one of the most recommended stop-offs on a trip along this part of the Águilas coast.
All of the beaches in this area are definitely for lovers of nature and landscapes which are practically untouched by man. While the land immediately behind the coastline has been exploited by agricultural concerns over the last few decades, the coast itself has remained remarkably undeveloped, and although of course there are also other areas of the Costa Cálida which have not been built-up this marks the area out as something of a rarity and a real gem for those who enjoy unspoilt coastline and natural beaches.
This is the twenty sixth beach in the series of 36 Águilas beaches which run along the 28 kilometres of Águilas coast, working from the Almería coastline in the west down to the Lorca municipality and offer both urban and wild beaches.
