For the third month in a row, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport has broken passenger records, and is flying high having recorded its busiest March in history.

A whopping 1,045,004 travellers passed through the terminal last month, according to Aena sources, which is 4.9% higher than the same month in pre-pandemic 2019 and an increase of 25.8% on March 2022.

Of the total number of passengers recorded in March, 1,043,730 were commercial travellers and 889,105 boarded international flights – up 3.9% compared to March 2019 and 26.2% more than in 2022.

Domestic flights accounted for 154,625 passengers, 10.6% more than before the Covid-crisis and 23.4% more than last year.

Once again, international traffic from the UK accounted for the largest share, with 375,537 passengers; followed by the Netherlands (86,044); Belgium (67,067); Norway (50,447); Germany (44,983), and Sweden (39,900).

In terms of operations, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport managed 6,800 flights, which is 0.5% more than the movements in March 2019 and 15.4% more than those recorded in the same month in 2022.

So far this year, the airport has handled 2,630,918 passengers, a growth of 2.6% compared to the first three months in 2019 and an increase of 39.4% on 2022.

And the positive data look set to climb further in 2023. Airlines have scheduled 2.3 million seats and around 66,800 commercial operations at Alicante airport for the spring/summer season (March 26 to October 28).

This is 4.4% more seats than those offered in the same season in 2019.

Europe continues to be the area with the most seats on offer, with 10.2 million seats and a 1% increase in supply compared to summer 2019.

By country, there is a more diversified distribution of seats with strong percentage increases in France, up 35% with nearly 600,000 seats offered, and Italy, which increases its seats by 55% with nearly 390,000 seats.

At the top of the table is the UK with more than 4.1 million seats (91% of the 2019 supply), Germany with more than 780,000 seats (99% of the 2019 supply), the Netherlands (720,000 and 4% increase), Norway (616,000 and 98% of the 2019 supply) and Belgium with 613,000 seats (+7%).

On the flip side, there are almost 220,000 seats on offer to/from Africa, which is 26% less than in 2019.
