Despite a continued rise in daily Covid cases, hopes are high in Alicante that pre-pandemic tourist levels of 15 million visitors will be reached this summer.

President of Alicante Provincial Council, Carlos Mazón met this week with airport and tourism representatives, and revealed he is "very optimistic about the tourist season at Easter" and is confident passenger numbers will hit those recorded in 2019 this summer.

The president met with Laura Navarro, director of Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport; Juan Alberto Martín, head of AENA's customer relations division; and José Francisco Mancebo, director of the Patronato Costablanca, at Fitfur tourist fair in Madrid on Wednesday January 19, to boost Alicante's air connectivity.

"Provided there are no unpleasant surprises with the pandemic, we aspire to recover the 15 million travellers recorded in 2019. We are recovering connectivity with the British market, which is fundamental, and plan to strengthen our great relationship with the Scandinavian tourism sector," said Mazón.

The president stressed the importance of the Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish markets, all of which have direct flights to Alicante, and added that connectivity with Eastern countries, such as Russia, is "recovering very well, which is great news for the Easter and summer campaign".

"The fact that in Alicante province there are a total of 300,000 international residents, mostly British, French, Russian and Norwegian, means that the transport offer has to be in line with their needs.

"We are optimistic because we are also initiating talks to help us to grow in a very interesting German market which would allow us to diversify much more and promote the Costa Blanca on a large scale," said Mazón, adding that up to three new undisclosed airlines are "very close to basing themselves at Alicante airport".
