ARCHIVED - Alicante Local Police Canine Unit rescues almost 100 abandoned dogs
ARCHIVED ARTICLE
So far this year, the police dog unit has dealt with more than 300 alleged crimes of mistreatment, neglect and irresponsible ownership in Alicante
The Local Police Canine Unit in Alicante has rescued 98 abandoned dogs so far this year and praised members of the public for their "fundamental" assistance in alerting them to neglected, abused and unwanted animals.
In addition to saving almost 100 dogs from the streets and starvation, the unit has also issued 50 reports for poor sanitary conditions, and dealt with 77 complaints of predominantly dangerous dogs without a muzzle and/or roaming the streets without a leash or collar.
A further 124 owners have been reported for not micro-chipping their pooches or failing to keep health documentation in order.
Most recently, at around 11.45am on Sunday November 7, Alicante firefighters and the Local Police Canine Unit freed and rescued a dog which had been abandoned in a courtyard in Alicante city for more than a week.
Neighbours in Calle Benito Pérez Galdós reported the animal's plight, claiming it was barking incessantly and had been left in a "bad state of health and hygiene".
According to sources, the animal was discovered in "poor condition", surrounded by faeces and survived its ordeal thanks to locals who threw food into the garden.
Firefighters gained access through an adjoining house and, after calming the distressed animal, managed to secure a muzzle and leash and rescue the dog before placing it in the care of an animal protection organisation.
"The dog was being fed by neighbours who were providing it with water and bags of food to keep it alive. According to the reports it had not stopped barking for days," explained sources.
The owner has since been located and is currently under investigation for an alleged crime of abandonment. Once the proceedings have been completed and statements have been taken, the case will be processed and the owner is likely to be fined.
Alicante's Councillor for Security, José Ramón González, has praised residents "who were essential in alerting the authorities to the abandonment of this dog".
"I urge anybody who sees any animal suffering abuse or in a situation of neglect to notify the police immediately. It is essential to intervene as soon as possible to ensure the safety and survival of animals," he added.
