Alicante elections 2023: Valencian Community shifts allegiance to conservative Popular Party
Carlos Mazón has unseated socialist Ximo Puig to become the head of the Valencian government
As has been predicted in the polls for several weeks, the conservative Partido Popular (PP) has trounced the PSOE Socialist party in the May 28 regional elections, with Carlos Mazón unseating Ximo Puig to become the next president of the Valencian Community government. Despite the overwhelming victory, however, Mazón will still need to form a coalition with far-right VOX.
In Valencia overall, the PP doubled their number of deputies to 40 compared to the 2019 elections and secured more than 35% of the total votes. On the other hand, Podemos failed to garner even 5% and will be left out of the new regional government, while 18 Ciudadanos members will be absorbed following an equally disappointing showing.
The reigning PSOE under Puig will go forward with just four seats.
Shortly after midnight and once the results were known, a tired but relieved-looking Mazón appeared in front of the regional headquarters and promised to “give the Valencian Community the change it deserves.”
While the PP are widely expected to go into government with VOX, Mazón has only said that he will enter into talks with the remaining parties in the coming days.
Alicante election results
The Popular Party won another comfortable victory in Alicante City, with standing mayor Luis Barcala taking almost half the votes with 70% counted so far. This gives him the absolute majority, meaning he won’t have to rely on VOX to keep his seat.
VOX itself was the other big winner of the night, doubling its representation from two to four councillors.
Benidorm election results
The PP also swept the board in the tourist resort of Benidorm, and Toni Pérez will hold on to the Mayor’s Office for the third time, the second with an absolute majority. His party has doubled the number of votes and councillors obtained by its closest rivals, the PSOE.
The final tally shows that Benidorm City Council can celebrate its largest absolute majority ever, while ultra-right VOX has broken into the municipality for the first time, contributing one councillor.
While the PSOE came second in the race after the Partido Popular, the socialists still only managed to secure 27.25% of the overall votes.
Orihuela election results
The PP have once again been the winning force in Orihuela, obtaining 10 councillors with 11,703 (38.6%) of the votes. VOX, though, provided the biggest surprise of the night, going from two to four representatives and placing themselves as the likely party to form a coalition with.
Ciudadanos lost two councillors and are left with three, while the PSOE will enter local government with 21.8% of the votes and six councillors.
Orihuela council is home to 25 councillors overall and to secure the majority, the PPs would have needed at least 13.
La Nucia election results
La Nucia follows a similar trend and Bernabé Cano will maintain his mayoral office with a huge majority. This is the sixth consecutive victory for the PPs in this municipality, who will enter into government with 12 of the 17 total City Council members.
The PSOE has lost one representative, going from three to two. On the other hand, Alternativa por la Nucia, the pact between Compromís and Podem in the town, broke in with two councillors, as did VOX with one.
Altea election results
In a turn-up for the books, Altea has gone against form by securing nine councillors for Compromís. This isn’t enough for an overall majority though, and Diego Zaragozi will have to create a coalition if he wants to remain head of the City Council.
The PSOE achieved a disappointing three councillors (although it’s the most likely minority for a coalition government), while VOX has broken into the municipality with one.
Elche election results
Celebrations were in full swing in Elche Sunday night as an exultant Pablo Ruz with the PPs stepped into the Mayor’s post in a local coalition with VOX, sensationally unseating PSOE and Compromís after eight years.
L’Alfàs de Pi election results
Things took a different turn in l’Alfàs de Pi where the PSOE have upheld their absolute majority under the helm of Vicente Arques. His team secured 16 councillors, two more than last term, and beat the PPs by 13 reps.
Ciudadanos and Podemos are left without representation, but VOX scored another coup, securing two places for the first time.
