ARCHIVED - Alicante launches bid to fly Ecoplaya Flag at Postiguet beach
ARCHIVED ARTICLE -
The beach in Alicante city is being put forward as a candidate for this year's Ecoplayas Flag 2023 awards
Alicante City Council and UTE Alicante, the company reponsible for street cleaning and waste management, are pinning their hopes on Postiguet beach flying an Ecoplayas Flag in 2023 in recognition of "its cleanliness, services and innovation".
The distinction is awarded by the Technical Association for Waste and Environmental Management (Atergus) – a member of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).
The jury's decision will be revealed in coming weeks following an assessment of beach management based on criteria of sustainability and tourism development.
Postiguet beach is extremely busy due to its proximity to the city centre and the main tourist axis between the seafront and the old town. Measuring 808 metres long and more than 50 metres wide, it has an estimated surface area of 40,540m2 and a capacity of around 5,930 people.
Its infrastructures and facilities include 13 numbered accesses to the beach, a car park with 109 parking spaces reserved for disabled vehicles, toilets, first aid and life-saving facilities, a local police and Civil Protection station, a catering establishment and cafeterias.
It also has sports facilities with three beach volleyball courts, four children's playgrounds and a calisthenics unit, as well as a shaded area loungers, wooden walkways, footbaths, lockers and litter bins at all entrances.
Essentially, a lifeguard service operates between June and mid-September, as well as during holiday periods.
Postiguet beach is no stranger to accolades and has held quality certifications such as the Blue Flag continuously since 2006 and the Q for Tourist Quality certification awarded by the Spanish Institute for Tourist Quality since 2021.
The waters are subject to sanitary control with weekly analysis during the bathing season between June 1 and September 15.
"The Postiguet is cleaned by sieving sand along its entire length...and has an eco-innovative system for removing algae by means of a perforated bucket to prevent sand loss and a protocol to promote its regeneration, protecting the upwelling during stormy periods and when it is most affected," said Alicante Council.
"The beach is also considered an intelligent tourist destination thanks to the capacity control system using artificial vision cameras, alert screens and a system for informing users about the state of the sea and the alert level: green, yellow and blue, which is displayed on these devices and by means of flags," it added.
