E-scooter sales have boomed in recent years as more and more people of all ages opt for the nippy and convenient mode of electric transportation.

However, on the flipside, this particular type of Personal Mobility Vehicle (VMP) hasn't had an easy ride with local authorities across Alicante province imposing measures to crackdown on scooters being ridden on footpaths and riders failing to abide by the rules leading to countless accidents.

Because electric scooters are now classed as Personal Mobility Vehicles, they are subject to the same rules as cars, and Almoradí Town Hall and Local Police have launched a campaign to raise awareness about the new Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) rules and regulations, some of which are listed below.

Last year Almoradí Town Council unveiled its first campaign for the proper use of this type of vehicle, and the municipality's traffic ordinance was modified to include some sections directly related to VMPs.

And as was the case in 2021, this year's initiative will include the distribution of information leaflets in addition to a social media campaign.

Some of the electric scooter rules and regulations:

Driving on footpaths: The riding of e-scooters on footpaths or pedestrian areas is totally prohibited and carries a fine of up to 200 euros.

Carrying passengers: electric scooters are only authorised to transport one person and carrying a passenger can lead to a 100 euro fine.

Mobile phones: the use of mobile phones or any other communication device is prohibited. Failure to comply with this measure entails a fine of 200 euros.

Headphones: the use of headphones whilst driving an electric scooter also carries a fine of 200 euros.

Lights: e-scooters are not permitted on roads at night without appropriate lights and flouting this rule will be considered negligent driving and sanctioned with a 200 euro fine.

Drunk driving: if an electric scooter driver is found to be over the alcohol limit, they will be fined the same amount as any other motorist – between 500 and 1,000 euros. Driving under the influence carries a 1,000 euros fine.
