<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - 320,000-euro upgrade for the area at the mouth of the harbour of Cabo de Palos The harbour mouth of Cabo de Palos is to be upgraded and converted into a tourist attraction through a plan which was presented by the Town Hall of Cartagena on January 13, creating a large open space and viewing point where it is envisaged that cultural events will be held.

At the moment this area is in poor condition after being exposed for years to the effects of the sea and the wind: the surface is dirty and uneven, and the area is used as an unofficial car park, home during the winter to various camper vans and motorhomes.

<span style='color:#780948'>ARCHIVED</span> - 320,000-euro upgrade for the area at the mouth of the harbour of Cabo de Palos However, the Town Hall plans to upgrade an area of 1,400 square metres and reserve it for pedestrians, installing a terrraced side which will serve both as a viewing point for those looking out to sea and a seating area for concerts and the like. It is hoped that this will contribute to the de-seasonalization of tourism in Cabo de Palos, while the lighting is to be warm and welcoming rather than bright so as to avoid confusing sailors returning to port.

The project is budgeted to cost around 320,000 euros and is to be included in the municipal Sustainable Tourism initiative, which has received 5 million euros of EU funding and which also covers projects such as the upgrading of the gun battery of San Leandro and the Parque Torres. Once the works contract has been awarded – the tender process is to begin almost immediately – the project ought to be concluded within four months, and at the request of local residents the scheme will also include a statue in honour of the fishermen of Cabo de Palos both past and present.
