The official ‘Cambio de Poderes’ event was charged with emotion this weekend
More than 1,200 people witnessed, last Saturday February 11, the ‘Gala de Cambio de Poderes’ in
Águilas – a carnival event in which the main characters taking part in the parades and events this year take the baton from their predecessors, to officially kick off the
Carnival 2023 celebrations.
The evening began with a “spectacular performance” by the Official Ballet of the Federation of Peñas, directed by Cristina Vera. After this magnificent premiere, the mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, took the floor and then it was the vice-president of the Federation of Peñas, Ginés Parra, who read a speech from the president of this carnival organisation, José Alonso, who unfortunately couldn’t be there in person as he was recovering from an operation. Instead, he was awarded, remotely from his home, the golden mask of Carnival 2023, a distinction which recognises the work in favour of this important fiesta for the town and which is to be shared this year with the vital and deserving street cleaning service.
In addition, the ‘Caracola de Oro’ award was presented to local Benito Rabal, who was visibly emotional when collecting this distinction from the hands of the mayor, and music was provided by Cristina Adán, who once again performed her Carnival anthem “Volveremos a brillar”.
After the most formal part of the ceremony, which also included a moving tribute to two carnival members who sadly said goodbye to us last year, Tomás Consentino and Daniel Sánchez, the central moment of the evening came when Inma Martínez, Hilario Gris, Lorenzo Sánchez and Conchi Caparrós became Doña Cuaresma, Don Carnal, Mussona and Musa – the main characters of the festival.
“Back to the Future” wins first prize in the paper costume contest
Meanwhile, the Contest of Paper Costumes and Body Makeup of the Águilas Carnival 2023, which awards prizes for the best costumes made only from paper, has once again proven that the ingenuity and creativity of local carnival participants knows no bounds.
For another year running, the members of the Carnival paper workshop received unanimous and resounding applause from the audience, proof if proof were needed of their amazing ability to create magnificent costumes using nothing more than paper. After a tough deliberation by the members of the jury, which was made up of the Mayor, the vice-president of the Federation of Peñas, and the Councillor for Carnival, Cristóbal Casado, as well as the adult and children’s Carnival characters, the winning team was chosen as the “Back to the Future” peña.
In the body make-up category, it was the fantastic work of Cristel Van Den from Make Up Studio that won the trophy with “Catarsis”.
