Poppy displays created around Sector D in memory of those who served in armed conflicts to raise funds for the Royal British Legion
Volunteers and Gardening Team members from Sector D have created three Remembrance Day displays along Avenida de los Covachos, one at the Triangle area at the junction with Calle Tejos, another at the half-roundabout opposite leading to St Nicholas' Church and the third at the approach to Sector D. The latter has been landscaped around the Remembrance Cross and finished with a cascade of poppies (see image gallery below).
The poppy displays started with an appeal to residents to provide the cut off bottoms from plastic bottles: the response was overwhelming and over 1500 bottoms were received. These were painstakingly painted and placed on a backdrop to create a cascade effect, and other poppies were crocheted by volunteers.
The project team from the Sector D gardening crew landscaped the area around the cross at the entrance to Sector D, collecting large rocks to build a dry-stone wall, sleepers to build a bridge and general planting to create the Remembrance Display, finished off with red and white lights on the cross and a cascade of poppies from the cross and down the banked area.
The other displays are at the Triangle and mini-roundabout leading to the church. Volunteers used repurposed plastic bottles to create a cascade of poppies.
Thanks to the generosity of the Sector D Community and Gardening Group, a number of silhouettes of soldiers were purchased and added to the display.
To complement the display, you are invited to purchase a Remembrance Cross from the Royal British Legion Charity and place it along the top edge of the dry stone wall below the cross. This is your opportunity to personalise the display showing your gratitude to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice or reflecting on a personal memory. It will also support the Royal British Legion locally and within the Region of Murcia.
The Royal British Legion poppy tables where the crosses can be purchased will be situated during the next week at the following locations between 10am and 2 pm, Saturday outside Consum supermarket Sector B, Monday outside the Compusurf office Sector B, Thursday outside Consum supermarket Sector B and between Cat's Bar and Rendezvous Restaurant Sector A
The three displays will remain until the 13 November and if you wish to collect your cross they can be collected on the morning of the 14th. All crosses will be retained for next year’s display.
