MSC Cruises has selected Alicante port as the embarkation point for one of its most emblematic ships
MSC Cruises, Europe's leading cruise line, has chosen Alicante Port as the embarkation point for one of its most emblematic ships, the MSC Orchestra, during the 2022 summer season.
On its new Western Mediterranean itinerary, in which Spain and the Iberian Peninsula will be the main destinations, MSC Orchestra will visit the cities of Olbia, Genoa, Marseille, Cádiz, Lisbon, Menorca, and Málaga, as well as Alicante.
The decision by MSC Cruises, the third largest cruise company in the world and market leader in Europe, South America and South Africa, will be a welcome boost to local trade and business.
It's hoped that the 40,000 anticipated travellers who will board the liner on 12 separate occasions next year, will have "a significant economic impact on the city", according to a study carried out by the Valencia government on cruise tourism.
Each visitor spends an average of 48 euros in the city, a figure which may be even higher if the travellers who embark or disembark in Alicante extend their holidays with a few days' stay in the city, a fairly common practice among cruise passengers.
"We are very pleased to announce this new itinerary, which demonstrates the company's strong commitment to Spanish ports and destinations, and will offer great opportunities to bring southern Spanish destinations to cruise passengers from all over the world. Both travel agents and clients have been asking us for Alicante as a port of embarkation for some time and we are happy to be able to return and also to work again with our local suppliers," said MSC Cruises' General Manager for Spain, Fernando Pacheco.
Meanwhile, Alicante Port Authority is "delighted that a company of such prestige" is investing in the city, proving that the continued efforts made by authorities and companies within the sector to ensure Alicante becomes a base port for cruise ships "are beginning to bear fruit".
in addition to the 12 embarkations that the MSC Orchestra will make, another 60 cruise ship are scheduled to visit Alicante, meaning passenger numbers could reach 160,000 in 2022.
