ARCHIVED - Long-awaited Camposol flood risk prevention meeting held July 6
ARCHIVED ARTICLE Authorities met at the specially created “Mesa de Trabajo” (Working Round Table) to explore permanent solutions to the potential risk of flooding along the Aznares riverbed running through Sector D of the Camposol development
The creation of the Mesa de Trabajo or Round Table is a means for the relevant authorities to find solutions to the problem of the Rambla de los Aznares, which not only poses the risk of potential flooding (as occurred in 2014) but also raises a situation where technically around 600 homes are built on government land. This causes administrative problems in the completion of the Camposol urban plan being included in the General Plan of the municipality of Mazarrón and the urbanisation being finally fully adopted.
The Round Table proposal was one of the recommendations emanating from the regional parliament report on the matter approved in February 2018, but for various reasons was not actioned until a new council came into power in June 2019 and set up a Comisión Informativa (Information Commission) chaired by the Councillor for Camposol, Silvana Buxton.
It was at the Full (Pleno) Mazarrón Council meeting held on August 27 2019 that the Commission proposed the creation of the Round Table to include, as per the Regional Assembly recommendation, the Town Council of Mazarrón, the regional government of Murcia (CARM) and the national government Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS). The Commission also proposed the inclusion of the Camposol Residents Association (CRA), who were not included in the original Regional Assembly recommendation, and this proposal was approved unanimously and the Round Table was initiated.
Unfortunately, an initial lack of response from the national and regional authorities, CHS and CARM, followed by the onset of COVID resulted in no Round Table meetings being held for some time. However, after the Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, and Councillor for Town planning, Ginés Campillo, recently held talks with the CHS and also the Mazarrón PP Party proposed that an official request should be made to CARM to attend the Round Table, agreement was reached by all the authorities concerned and the meeting was duly arranged for July 6.
This was a preliminary meeting essentially to establish the circumstances and progress made to date. During the meeting technicians from all three authorities, Mazarrón Council, CARM and CHS, explained the historic and technical situation as well as outlining the solutions proposed thus far.
It was decided that further technical surveys and reports should be performed in relation to a previously proposed solution, and the Round Table will reconvene in September when the reports will be received and it is hoped further progress will be decided.
